OK hotel porn addicts, what's the sexiest hotel in the UK then? And has anyone actually been?

Dh is 30 in July and I want to take him away for a night (maybe 2, depends on babysitter availability) as a surprise. We will be living in Bucks/Northants somewhere so London would be ok as would anywhere within a couple/few hours.
If we found somewhere in Scotland or Cornwall then we could pos fly from Heathrow or Luton to Newquay or Edinburgh for somewhere amazing. So, has anyone actually been to any of the following and if so, what did you think?

The Grove, Herts, is very expensive, is it worth it?
The Sanderson, London, looks a bit clinical in the quicktime movies on their site is it?
The Halcyon, had its day or wonderful?
One Aldywch, looks fab but no room pictures, I really want a gorgeous room, anyone been?
Stowe Park, looks a bit chintzy

I don't want to do Babington or Hotel Du Vin but I do want boutique and cool/sexy not chintzy ir country house. In Cornwall I could go for
Driftwood
Tresanton

but would like to know if they're as fab as they look on the internet? We'd have to fly, it would be a long drive otherwise.

Any other coastal recommendations easily reachable from the South East? TIA for any comments. His birthday is in July so I've got loads of time but want to start thinking about it now (plus it's pleasurable, I like droolign over these sites!)

puff · 19/03/2006 22:24

I've stayed at Tresanton btw (a good while ago) and it was lovely, but a heck of a long way even if you flew part of the journey.

jmg1 · 19/03/2006 22:29

Have stayed at The Sanderson and One Aldywch,
nothing to get excited about though.

Maybe go for something out of town and more relaxing.

ScummyMummy · 19/03/2006 22:33

Are you sure about staying in the UK? If you're up for flying it might be just as quick to go abroad? He's a lucky man, btw.:)

MrsMuddle · 19/03/2006 22:43

What about The Witchery in Edinburgh? \link{http://www.thewitchery.com\here} Have never managed to book it, but it's meant to be fab.

puff · 19/03/2006 22:45

I fancy \link{http://www.firmdale.com\The Soho Hotel} if I were staying in London

WideWebWitch · 20/03/2006 09:00

Oh jmg, were they really not all that then? What in particular was not fab? OK, they're off my list. I like the look of Burgh Island, it's near where we used to live in Devon, thanks, it would be romantic from a 'ah, we met in Devon' pov. Sophable, ooh, have been to Andrew Edmunds, long ago though, maybe it should be London, could be v romantic. Iota, I got a way through googling those hotels, good list, great drooling! (sounds like a hamlet somewhere doesn't it?)Thanks Puff, the Portobello looks good, will look at the Soho now. Scums, yes to uk, because, embarrassingly, both our passports have run out and I don't want to renew mine until I am thinner since the photo will be there for 10 long years! Vain hey? The Witchery looks romantic, will browse that site again, thanks MrsM. Will look at Barnsley House, too, thanks.

I get to stay in lots of hotels due to my job, one of my faves is \link{http://www.the-vineyard.co.uk/index.asp\here}

I also love The Grove, though I agree it is very expensive. Also check out Down Hall, and The Landmark in London.

The Old Course in St Andrews is stunning but I guess that's too far?!

WideWebWitch · 20/03/2006 09:10

Can't do The Landmark, has memories, nor the Waldorf. Northerner, is the Grove worth it?

WideWebWitch · 20/03/2006 09:11

Vineyard looks nice too, thanks.

The Grove truly is stunning, and yes, I would say for a one off very special occassion, it is worth it. You won't be dissapointed.

The very fact that they hardly ever reduce rates and still acheive high occupany levels proves that everyone wants to go there.

Have you looked at The Runnymede Hotel & Spa? It's owned by the same people who own the Grove, but is only 4 star as opposed to 5 so therefore cheaper! Still v nice though. Worth a look.

oinker · 20/03/2006 10:11

The Baglioni London....... Very Nice. EXPENSIVE

Rural retreats are great for romantic getaways too.

treacletart · 20/03/2006 10:45

Spent my wedding night in the "Absolut Love" sute at the Pelirocco in Brighton. Very large bed and chaise longue with lots of deep red velvet everywhere. It was quite fun for night time but all looked a bit tired and cheesy in the daylight if I'm honest. I know you want to do Hotel du Vin but I think the tunbridge wells one was the sexiest hotel I've been in - think my DS was conceived there! Grin

Detta · 20/03/2006 11:52

We had a great weekend at the Royal Horseguards hotel in London. Booked a room which overlooked the river - opened the curtains to look out over the London Eye and woke up on sunday morning to the sound of Big Ben. I love London, though so maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea for a romantic trip!

WideWebWitch · 20/03/2006 12:33
