What else to do in Florida except the parks?

We have booked out flights and villa (in Orlando). We are travelling with the inlaws and DS who will be 6.5 by the time we go (July next year).
We have been before and have done alot of the parks and may return to some such as Sea World and the water parks.
My Mum went last year to visit long lost relative and went to St Augustine which is supposed to be a bit hystoric.
I would like to do some other day trips as well.
We have a 3-4 day trip planned to pass through Maimi and go down to the Keys.
Which parts of the Keys should we visit? I would love DS to see some wild life down there and may take a boat trip to the Everglades etc.
I need to plan and book other wise our trip will comprise of too many days shopping which I find tedious on holiday as we can do that at home!!
Any ideas would be very welcome!

Kennedy space centre is a must - allow a full day for the visit though. Check out the lonely planet book on the keys - john pennecamp park is worth a visit and it is at the top end. remember that it takes a couple of hours to get to the end of the keys though.

I second the suggestion for John Pennecamp. A few years ago we hired an RV and drove from Orlando right down to the Florida Keys. We spent a few nights at Pennecamp and then drove down to Key West which was really worth the visit.

We've also done day trips to Clearwater beach and Cocoa beach both of which were really nice

I agree Kennedy Space Centre is worth a visit. Also here are some other ideas:

Orlando Science Center
Childrens Petting Farm
Nature Visit Duck Tour South Beach

We've also done beach trips to Clearwater and St. Pete's.

Have a great holiday.

In Miami, there are some nice family things to do. Try Fairchild Tropical Garden, Vizcaya Palace & Gardens next to the Museum of Science. Both are near/in the Coconut Grove area. If you go to Miami Beach, South Beach might be a bit loud and garish for the kids. Further up (North Beach, Haulover, Aventura) are nicer public beaches. Just be prepared for a lot of driving and nothing to look at on the roads in Florida. An airboat ride in the Everglades also is a fun thing to do if you're adventurous. You'll see lots of alligators, egrets, turtles, etc. Have fun!

Another vote for space centre.
Some beaches are nice.
Er...Struggling after that.
I'm from California. My Aunt got married in St. Petersberg in a super-fundy wedding & we spent the whole time telling religious & puketastic jokes (Aunt planned cleverly & parked my rowdy disrespectful lot in the far corner away from everyone else). We struggle to think of much that's nice about FA.
I'd probably look for somewhere that makes me think of Bogie or Hemingway.

Ooh, Manatees, I wonder if you can go on a tour to see some in the wild.

We have stayed at both Anna Maria Island and Fort Myers Beach (from where we also visited Sanibel Island) and love the Gulf Coast of Florida. Lovely beaches, a nice laid-back feel and both times we have seen Dolphins and also Manatees in Anna Maria.
