Got to choose between these two hotels for our break at eurodisney later this year... Any advice much appreciated. Thanks

We stayed at the Sequoia and I thought it was dreadful. Food was awful. Children's food was served lukewarm and the waiter directed us to a microwave to heat it up. Room was basic. On reflection I would have paid for a better quality hotel. Imho as a rule of thumb you are getting a hotel equivalent to half the cost you actually pay, so for me if the Sequoia is rated a 4 star (can't remember rating) it seemed to only be a 2 star compared to any other normal hotel. If we ever went back I would stay at that is in the park.

Purpleprickles · 04/09/2012 22:32

Just to give an alternative view we stayed at the Sequioa in Feb on a five day break and thought it was fine. The pool was a bit small and disappointing but the room was fine and we liked the bar/lounge area with the roaring fire. We also thought the food was good in the buffet but expensive, though it was everywhere. We really only used the hotel for sleeping though and weren't there much. Sorry to hear you didn't like it Bisjar.

I just didn't think it was worth the money compared to the cost of a normal hotel. We didn't use the pool (it was early Sept and too cold). We had dining tickets and I thought the food throughout the park (as well as the hotel) was poor quality mass catering. We were only in the hotel for breakfast and a couple of dinners. Breakfast was ok provided you didn't want anything cooked but dinner was horrible. Lots of the restaurants seemed to be buffet style and not very nice. The nicest 'meal' we had was a filled baguette from a sandwich place that was lovely and fresh.

We've no plans to go back but I wonder if the Disneyland hotel is nicer? It is certainly a lot more expensive. The artificial ice rink outside the Newport was nice.

I also didn't think there was any benefit in getting early access to the park as there were only the same few rides available each day, which were for younger children (ds was 6 when we went but the early rides - eg teacups - were pretty dull). We ended up getting amazing scores on the Buzz Lightyear laser quest as that is all we did every day before the main rides opened.

I think if we went back we would stay in a non-Disney hotel in the hope that for the same money as the Sequoia we'd get a nicer place.

bisjaralympics · 04/09/2012 23:08

The one good thing was the luggage drop off/collection that worked very well. I assume this isn't available at a non-Disney hotel.

When we stayed at Newport Bay (admittedly a few years ago) we stayed on the 'Admirals Floor' specifically to be able to order the room service breakfast and avoid the morning scrum in the dining room. It was included but we paid a few euro for delivery to the room.

Although it had a pool we only used it once.

bisjaralympics · 05/09/2012 00:11

I'd forgotten the morning scrum. We had a 7-7.30 slot which was fine. It seemed to get crazy from about 7.45am. We had to negotiate the breakfast time at check in (they give you timed tickets). They were reluctant to give us an early slot.

CharlieBoo · 05/09/2012 19:58

Thank you... So that's the Sequoia out then Hahahaha.

So.. What's the Newport Bay like? The Disney hotel right by the park is more than double the price of these two so not an option..

We stayed in the Sequoia this year and really liked it. Last year we stayed at Val d'Europe and had to rely on the shuttle buses - it was great to just walk over.

I suppose it depends on what you are used to. In the UK we tend to use Travelodges, so the SL was a step up for us. If you are used to 4* then it might not seem so nice.

The water in the pool was freezing but that was our only complaint. The pool itself was nice.

thereinmadnesslies · 05/09/2012 20:09

We liked the Newport Bay hotel, but oddly we actually found the way cheaper Hotel Cheyenne more atmospheric and fun.

There isn't much overt Disney theming in the room, just a vague nautical theme which was a bit too subtle for the DC (age 3 and 5) - they didn't see any difference between the Disney room and a standard hotel room. The pool was good however. Breakfast was a bit of a scrum in the hotel but we took the option of eating breakfast in the park on the other morning which was really nice. There were character appearances in reception in the morning and afternoon. We didn't find any other 'child-friendly' things to do in the hotel, there may have been an outdoor play area but we were there in mid-march so too cold and wet Sad

CharlieBoo · 05/09/2012 20:21

It's going to be about £1200 for 4 nights in either hotel, breakfast, park tickets and direct Eurostar for the 4 of us fora long weekend in December.... We thought that was really reasonable but what do you think?

Think we'll go for the Newport bay... We won't really be there much only For sleeping... Is it close to the parks?

Thanks for all this advice, it's so helpful

We've stayed at the Newport Bay and the Sequoia Lodge, and much prefered the Newport Bay. It is light and airy, whereas the Sequoia rooms seem quite dark to me.

We've also stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. The rooms are quite similar to the Newport Bay, but the public areas are a bit posher. It has loads more character appearances on every morning at breakfast (and there is no breakfast scrum), so you can do the main characters in the hotel and so don't waste time queuing in the park for them. You also get a fastpass each a day, which will allow you to walk (almost) straight onto a ride. But, as you say, its silly money to stay there.

Growlithe · 05/09/2012 20:29

Its about a 15 min walk with small children, or there is a shuttle bus which runs very frequently.

CharlieBoo · 05/09/2012 20:40

Thanks that's really helpful

Growlithe you've been 3 times?

Growlithe · 05/09/2012 21:26

Five Blush We are Disney crazy, we are going to Florida at Easter for the first time. My DH and I are like that advert where the parents are more excited than the kids Grin

bisjaralympics · 05/09/2012 21:35

Wow. I need a lie down just to think about that. 5 times to Disneyland Paris must be a record. Once seemed more than enough for both myself and ds. I can understand the appeal of Florida because of the weather and the more naturally friendly Americans (compared to the French).

WannaSplitAPineapple · 05/09/2012 21:37

We're big kids and have stayed at them all bar the Disneyland Hotel. I would say the Cheyenne has the best theming and atmosphere although it is an extra walk to the parks. Sequoia is my favourite especially if you go in winter and they have the big log fires going. Newport bay was a bit lacking for me, I see it more as a convention hotel. Don't get me wrong it is nice but the theming wasn't as good. Can't comment on food as we only have breakfast there and eat in the park or Disney village the rest of the time.

growlithe Florida is amazing! The service just puts Paris to shame. We're also going to Florida at Easter Smile

Growlithe · 05/09/2012 21:48

We should have gone to Florida or my 40th, but I was pregnant. We went to DLP instead and stayed at the Disneyland. We were having a birthday dinner at the nice restaurant in the hotel but Captain Hook turned up and terrified DD1, who was 4 at the time. She was crying, and then the hormones kicked in and I started crying! I don't suppose many people can say Captain Hook ruined their 40th birthday Grin

Ju1es22 · 06/09/2012 22:21

Definitely Newport Bay its a better standard and great location! Right near the Disney village with Planet Hollywood and Rainforest Cafe ect

CharlieBoo · 06/09/2012 22:26

Thanks...

One more question... Do you bother buying a ticket for an under 4 on the Eurostar? Dd is 3 and it's over £100 for a seat for her, is it like a normal train where you can sit anywhere?

OP posts:
bisjaralympics · 06/09/2012 22:42

All the Eurostars I've ever been on (including the Disney one) have reserved seating so you would have to sit where you booked ( you can choose seat and carriage when you book online). You don't need to buy a seat for an under 4 but they will have to sit on your lap (like under 2s on airplanes).

Growlithe · 06/09/2012 23:29

Don't know where you are but have you priced Easyjet? We aren't far from Liverpool, so obviously we go this way. No experience of Eurostar sorry.

defineme · 06/09/2012 23:50

Stayed in the Newport half board (care of pil so no idea of cost). Dinner buffet was bloody fabulous. I thought most of the restaurants in the park were vile fast food, but this was proper lovely French food( as well as a section of bland stuff for the fussy kids/pil) with lovely roasts/stew/risotto/fish/salads/acres of lovely puddings/cheeses...
We had 74 yrold and 4 yrold in our party and we all had no problem walking to the park.
Enjoyed the swimming pool-went every night after dinner with the kids to wind down.
Our room was for 6 so hilarious size with 3 double beds-it had a little lobby area wher I could read if the kids went to bed first. Pil and cousins got upgraded to a suite with a tiny piano and an extra bathroom.
I'm not a fan of theme parks/Disney, The Newport was the very best part of the stay for me and I couldn't wait to get back there after being in the park all day.

Floralnomad · 07/09/2012 00:00

We have stayed at both and NEwport Bay is better , prob worth paying the extra for the Admirals Floor, breakfasts there are busy but luckily for us when we last stayed there we got an upgrade to the Captains Dining Room . However it may be worth you looking at the New York which is a 4* and is lovely , this is where we normally stay and I prefer it to the Disneyland Hotel as when we stayed there I really couldn't work out why it was so much more expensive.

Knowsabitabouteducation · 07/09/2012 18:37

We have been in the Newport Club, but it was 13 years ago. The main thing I can remember was that it was massive. It was quite a hike to our rooms, with many twists and turns in the corridors, but fortunately amazingly we did not get lost. The pool area was tiny.
