Help! My kids are in need a holiday

We usually holiday in uk but last 2 years we were short of money as we moved house. We had holiday booked in Cornwall beginning of the month but this only lasted 4 days due to a family bereavement (their grandma died) and the children were devastated

i've 4 children. 16,12,9 and 7. They have never been on a plane but would love to. I would love to book a holiday now for next summer so they have something to look forward to especially as my eldest is getting to the age where she wont come with us anymore and she has done so well in her gcse exams.

Can anyone suggest a place we could go in europe, that wont break the bank. Less than £2500 for 6 of us that we could share some special memories. Would prefer Villa/cottage/hotel with facilities. not keen on camping/caravaning. It seems everyone is enjoying holiday except us :(

What does it mean when people bump?

dreamingofsun · 25/08/2012 10:29

I assume that doesn't include spending money? Excluding the car hire that was the cost of our recent holiday to portugal, though there are only 4 of us. are you talking a week or 2? i would look at cheap flights and good value countries. so i'd rule out france, greece, balearics as self catering accommodation is expensive . consider mainland spain, portugal as these are better value. have you looked at owners direct/holiday rentals?

dreamingofsun · 25/08/2012 13:30

if you like cornwall you could do a gite in france mind you - brittany is similar with nicer weather and less people/tat. gites are cheaper than mobiles (cost us 3k last time) and if you did a cheap crossing and didn't mind driving a bit you could do for about 2.5k.

Don't really know about prices but you may want to think about Croatia, Bulgaria etc.

If you prefer a villa then going to Owner's Direct or www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/ is normally cheaper than via the holiday companies like James' Villa.

We just did 10 days in the Costa blanca (cabo roig, no high rise) spent £1600. This was for 6 of us me dh 5,8,13,15 yr dc's in August, total spend - flights, transfers, airport parking, spending money, private apartment, meals out every other night so it can be done :)

I'd second the 'Owner's Direct' recommendation or holiday rentals - maybe think about an apartment, rather than a villa with a pool. You could still be near to a beach, so no real need for a pool, especially as your kids are older. Also, I'd always look to book flights and accommodation separately, so that you have more control over dates etc.. and that way, maybe you can have a 10 day holiday, rather than 2 weeks, bringing the price down a little too...

Sued if you post a thread and have no, or few, replies, you type "bump" or someone else will post just to "bump" it for you without having anything useful to add themselves in order for the thread to appear on the "Active Threads" list again and hopefully get more people replying to it e.g. a thread is started in the morning and bumped in the evening when more mums can sit down after work and kids are sorted.

Spain is usually cheapest. U could get an all inclusive place in Majorca, then the kids can get food and drinks when they want.
Their passports won't be cheap tho.
Look online, websites like 'sunshine' etc.

thankyou everyone. Have been checking out your suggestions :)
