I'm going to be spending three weeks in St Petersburg in September - does anyone have any tips on what to pack (15kg baggage allowance!) or what to do?
Thanks :)

Envy

With 3 weeks I'd explore St Petersburg, you could spend most of that time i nthe Hermitage!. Go to a ballet or 2, you can usually just go down to the kiosk on the afternoon and pick up cheapish tickets for the night. Then take the overnight train to Moscow and spend a couple of days there and a couple of days out of Moscow seeing a few places on the golden ring and maybe try to catch something at the Bolshoi while in Moscow to it has all been refurbished.

So very Envy. I long to go back to Russia!

In sep it can often snow so I'd take warm coat just in case. Do you have kids with you? Recommendations about what to do would be v different deornding on whether have kids or not.

Get to peterhof early in the trip in case freakish early cold weather (as happened to me when lived there) means they have to close all the fountains in peterhof early.

It's a beautiful city. 3 weeks is almost not enough to see it all!

Sorry for the late reply!
Thankyou both very much for your help; no, no kids with me this time.
I'd never heard of Peterhof before, but it looks amazing, will definitely try to see it!
It looks such a beautiful city :)
Thanks again!

I went a long time ago, but found one of those tiny maglite torches really useful as back streets were badly lit and often quite potholed.

And if current advice is still not to drink the tap water, take that very seriously - no ice or teeth brushing with it - the local nasty is pretty nasty!

I loved it there. I loved the Russian museum as well as the Hermitage. Also Pushkin's house is really interesting, and there is a little covered market nearby where you can marvel at 1000 different types of sour cream, honey and cucumbers.

If you can get a trip to a banya in some way, do it, it's great. Perhaps try to organise through your hotel or a tourist group. My Russian friends didn't seem to be all that keen on the public ones, thought they might be a bit grubby.

it's also worth having a bash at learning Cyrillic. It's not actually that hard, and it will make you feel super cool.

Oh and if you are out late on any of the islands, make sure you check the bridge opening and closing timetables, you don't want to get stuck. And learn the difference between the different Baltika beers. One is a nice lager, one looks exactly the same but is actually rocket fuel.

I am very envious.

Church of our saviour is nice - I like it becasue I love St Basils.
How good is your Russian?
I loved going on the Moscow metro and the St Petersburg metro, and once you get to grips with the maps of the metro, its fine - easier than the New York One !!
I too am so very very jealous. Have a fab time.

Oops, meant Dostoyevsky House, not Pushkin House. There probably is a pushkin house, but I've not been to it! I've been away all weekend, but had to come on here to correct myself.
