We are staying in a place called Niton near Ventnor. DCs are 7 and 5 and this is their first non camping holiday and they are very excited :) I have been before but last time was 1999 I think so no idea where the best places to visit are.

Any tips on places to visit and eat eagerly accepted!

Thanks :)

We are going on the 29th Aug for a day out. going to visit dinosaur isle but anywhere else which is good for a 2,3,13 and 16 year old or would we be better off hitting the beach and relaxing after dinosaur isle?

Also is parking ok/cheap on the isle. There will be 7 of us and we are staying 10 miles away from Portsmouth so figured the car would be easier than public transport

Debs75 bringing the car will definitely work out cheaper than public transport - the buses are expensive over here. I would say that the beach might be the best thing if the weather is great when you are here - if you fancy trying water sports then head to Lake (next door to Sandown) and Wightwater which is great. (Drive from Sandown, through the lights en route to Shanklin and look for car park just past the YMCA - lots of steps down to the beach.)

Anyone here for the Bank holiday will get to see the island full of scooters as thousands descend for the weekend. They are based in and around Ryde but do some fabulous ride outs and are pretty impressive.

The Garlic Festival this weekend is something that our girls really look forward to - especially the dancing dogs! We love the garlic sweetcorn and nosing though all the stalls and stands and watching the arena shows as well as seeing what bands are playing. We will be there on Sunday.

Robin Hill is the sister site to Blackgang Chine - you can get a ticket that covers one or both and return as often as you like in the week. Yes, taking your own food makes sense but it is pretty standard fare/park prices.

Yes, Puckpool Park is great but parking does fill up quickly - you can park at Ryde (big free car park right at the e nd of the seafront and walk along though.

Oh and if you are staying in Niton (lovely small village, very 1950s!!) then the Buddle Inn is lovely as is a walk over the fields to St Catherine's lighthouse.

(Waves to Charliepop! Both my girls are now patching again so are back in the gang with your DS - although they do not have sticky patches so cannot copy the bedroom door decoration which they loved at your house!)

I second Amazon world zoo.
My dh freaked out at the sloth hanging from the ceiling, t'was very funny watching a huge rugby player scream like a girly. Lots to see, and do there. I second the needles though.

Dysgu I can't believe it - I have never known a mumsnet person in real life Shock (we have never actually met but swapped houses for our holidays this year) And there I am, sharing all the tips you gave us Blush

fromheretomaternity · 16/08/2012 23:32

Chairlift and speedboat ride at the needles
Black gang Chine
Beaches
Horse and groom pub
Osbourne house

We had a fab time

The owl and monkey (or was it monkey and owl? Confused) place is very nice. Beautifully developed and good fun.

Longdistance we were going to book for the Amazon Zoo but when we read the reviews they were terrible, has it got better?

Thanks Dysgu Is Isle of Wight big enough for a full weeks holiday? If we survive the 6 hour drive we might go again one year

charliepop no worries about sharing our tips; obviously means they were good ones. And no, I have never 'known' another MNer in rl either!

Gosh the sea was busy with people today - we took the hover craft to the mainland for the day though.

Debs75 yes the island is plenty big enough for a full week - at least. We house swap so like to think the people coming here enjoy the whole time and there are still loads of things that we have never done yet! (This week we plan on going to see the jousting at Carisbrooke Castle for the first time ever. Might even go horse riding in St Helens - never done that before either!)

Ohhelp - the sister park to Blackgang is Robin Hill - so much fun - is where Bestival is held!!
