Cheyenne over Santa Fe (althought this is by repute and practicalities rather than personal experience). Personally if you're happy to shuttle bus between hotel and park (unless you want a long walk necessary for the Santa fe) I'd look at the cheaper but better quality associate hotels, My explorers used to be very nice with good food. If you want to avoid the shuttles it would need to be the cheyenne. But if you can stretch to the Sequioa, it is a lovely hotel in winter.

It really can be very cold but if it snows (or ices over) it is really very beautiful and adds to the atmosphere. Wrap up warm (warm hats scarfs and gloves are essential), a fleece blanket or 2 can be very useful (e.g. sitting on or under and evenings with buggies)... I have so many more tips for winter visits...

Quiet and much less busy which is nice, but bear in mind not all the shows run and some of the parades run shortened versions.

any winter tips would be awesome! will look at the price difference for the sequioa now

If you can afford one of the nearer hotels, definitely worth it to skip the shuttles with a buggy. In the quiet stroll home past the disney lake is a nice quiet and beautiful end to the day

Make use of the extra magic hours (even though that means getting up early)and fast pass system. In the main park with your little one, head for fantasy land first and get that out the way before it gets busy. When mine we're that little they also really loved buzz lightyears intergalactic spin.

Grab a show timetable asap and plan your days round that. Especially with the studios park which is really show heavy. Try and catch the parades in both parks.

Leave time for the studio park in fact . Mine loved Animagique, playhouse disney, and stitch live (you will love this as adults, if you haven't fallen in love with the stitch character you will after this).

The stunt show in the studios is spectacular (love it now has lightening Macqueen in it) but noisy and very cold. It also gets cancelled if it's too cold and icy for the cars so catch it at the first opportunity, don't leave it to the last show of the day only to find that's the one they cancel). 2 fleece blankets make a big difference: one to sit on (metal bench seats)one to cover your lap (good idea for all the shows). to avoid the burning man stunt (spectacular but visually a little scary) either leave after the macqueen sequence or as the man falls off the motorbike hide under the blanket.

(I have a small collection of DLP blankets Grin)

Not sure whether yours is a young or old one year old, But if one year old is old enough and you only buy one souvenir make it an autograph book and pen almost as soon as you arrive. It gives the kids something to do when they meet the characters which helps them if they are nervous. write your childs name in the front, very occasionally the characters lot here to write a personal message. If you enjoy the characters try to do one character dining

I've stayed at the Cheyenne before in July, buses were every 10 mins, not too busy and vey easily done!

LunarRose · 16/08/2012 21:26

Is the cheyenne nice? it is meant to be an easy walk from the park and a nice hotel but I've never done it....

personally love the sequioa, don't like the Newport bay, was impressed by the overall quality of my explorers but hated the shuttles (although that was during the busy christmas season)

not that I'm thinking about going again again

sunnyday123 · 16/08/2012 21:38

It has a great theme, especially for boys but my dds enjoyed it! Tents, ponies, those inflatable walker bubble things!, Disney characters etc.

It is quite basic and rustic in style because of the cowboy theme but for 4 days it was great. Tbh because people in Disney hotels get 8-10am in the park without day guests we were up and out by 8:30am everyday, back for quick change round 5pm and out ready for tea and parade by 6:30pm, home by 11pm so only used to sleep!

LunarRose · 16/08/2012 21:44

did you do the walk along the river?

sunnyday123 · 16/08/2012 22:23

No we got the bus each time as it always seemed to be there! Plus I felt mean on the dds as they were only 5 and 3 and were walking all day in the park as it was!

I have been in January. It was lovely. Cold but took some thermals rather than a heave coat. Lots of lighter layers. It does add to the experience I think.

ash6605 · 17/08/2012 11:57

We have been in Feb,and contrary to other posts it was pretty hot! Dont think we wore a coat once, just cardigans and jumpers and it never rained.I'm guessing that we were lucky and it was a one off!

We are going early Oct this year, can anyone advice on weather then?

kiwibella · 21/08/2012 00:45

we have been in Feb and it snowed!
My neighbours and other friends stayed at Santa Fe. If your children are in to Cars, make sure you request a refurbished room. I'm pretty sure my neighbours walked from Santa Fe to Disney Park.

hannahkj19 · 22/08/2012 15:27

have already booked is it too late to request a refurbed room???

kiwibella · 24/08/2012 14:12

I wouldn't think so. Phone or email the hotel directly.

TwiggysGoneOnHolidayByMistake · 26/08/2012 09:09

Cheyenne is fabulous - we always stay there. Apart from this November when we are doing the Disneyland Hotel :o Cheyenne is widely-acknowledged amongst Disney fans as having the best theming. And kids love the bunk beds, which you don't get at any other hotel. Definitely not too late to make a room request, btw.

We went in Feb and it was VERY busy. We had some days where we were miserably cold and some where we had just jumpers and no coats.

LunarRose, I am definitely going to do your fleece blanket idea - what a great tip! I also saw someone use one when queuing for the parades which is a fab idea too as people weren't pushing in at the last minute as even DLP visiters aren't rude enough to sit on someone elde's blanket :)
