Yes I know its only August and I've mentioned the C word already ... sorry !

In a moment of epiphany I realised that I don't have to go through the ghastly rigmarole of Christmas at home now that my boys are old enough to know that Santa is a phoney. Anyone spent Christmas away from home ( UK or otherwise) with their teenagers ? And if so can you recommend ?I'm thinking of a turkey ( poultry not the country ) free zone . Believe me I need some light at the end of this interminable summer holiday tunnel to look forward to !

When I was a teenager we went skiing one Christmas & I'd definitely recommend it.

I have spent Christmas on holiday abroad (skiing and Tenerife) and in England (twice at Center Parcs) and preferred England as felt we missed out on Christmas when we were abroad. My teens like Christmas at home best and then a holiday for the New Year. This works well as then happy to see all the relatives knowing I'm getting a break in a few days.
I haven't been at Christmas but one holiday I really recommend with teens is cruising as there is so much for everyone to do.

I am also thinking about this really don't know if i can do another xmas with the inlaws (they always come to us and I always cook).Like the idea of new year break though

We also go skiing at Christmas (and have done since DS was 3) - tend to go every other year and then do something 'different' on the years we are at home; personally I don't like getting into a 'routine' about Christmas, although I know a lot of people do Smile. We have a great time when we go away.

New York at Christmas is great too.

Skiing not really us , I have a bad knee and hip , one ds objects on conservation grounds and the other is going skiing with school in March, the other is dyspraxic . Did think about New York though

Florida is lovely at Christmas - but not that Christmassy - if that's what you are after? You can buy some Christmas stuff and some people put trees up but you barely know it's Christmas, other than the fact everything actually closes for a day.

Tons for teens to do there - fab beaches, (great watersport potential depending on where you go), great sports to watch, fab shopping, and then of course there's the theme parks if you like that kind of thing....my DC just love chilling at Christmas - we rent a villa with a pool and have a lot of lazy days swimming, reading, playing cards - heaven Smile

When I was 15 we went to Florida. Flew on Christmas Eve, spent Christmas Day and New Years Eve in the Magic Kingdom for the fireeorks and shows. Did a few days on the beach, Universal, Busch Gardens.

It was fantastic!!

Cheaper option- tell the inlaws you are going away and then stay at home for Christmas and go out for lunch!

outtolunchagain · 15/08/2012 07:02

They live in next village so that would be difficultGrinThey are lovely and I am very fond of them but in twenty years of marriage we have only not spent Christmas with them 3 times and it's boring!!

The children are not small anymore and Christmas is just a mass of work , buying presents , endless cooking etc. I just feel that it's a lot of money and effort for no payback and I dread it every year now.

Hi can I hijack? I have felt like that for the last few years. It gets harder, work work , cook cook, very expensive and not much fun anymore. My trio will be 15 in Jan, they rip open their presents then disappear! I lost my lovely Mum in July :( and would never go away because of wanting to be with her, sadly that has changed. We haven`t had a proper holiday since 2007, my dh has cancer and is in remission atm. Would love to feel the sun on my back, love to see us all having fun. Biggest problem for us now is getting insurance for dh, esp to go back to the State, our fav place.

I'm just re-visiting this thread after having spent Christmas at home , followed by a 3 day break in a luxury Cotswolds Hotel - my top tip ? Buy insurance . We arrived in the morning , I went down with some hideous bug almost immediately and so we left that evening after I'd spent the best part of the day with my head down a toilet . No refund as our 'cancellation' was within 24 hours. Lesson learnt ? Probably not !
