I've just renewed mine, and I googled EHIC as I didn't know what website to use. Loads of websites came up that look all official etc - I didn't realise til I was half way through that I had chosen one of these profiteers.

So - be aware, it is FREE fron the NHS. www.ehic.org.uk

We recently got our through the EHIC website but I'm now informed that is not an official site. Maybe others won't be quite so in a hurry as I was.

I fell for one of these too AND they made a mistake! Shock

Ugh. I paid for ours. They look exactly the same - does that mean that they are not even real? :(

These websites charge people for a service that is free to the user. No-one should ever pay for EHIC cards but agencies have sprung up to prey on the unwary. The same problems re payment through agencies who overcharge happens with people who apply for ESTA's (electronic travel authorisation for the US) and Australian travel visas to name but two.

Do not solely rely on EHIC cards abroad for insurance needs; they are not a substitute for travel insurance.
