Chester Zoo - thoughts?

Planning a day trip in a few days time & wondered what people thought of Chester Zoo with 3 boys - nearly 6, nearly 4 & 15 months old.

It will take us a couple of hours to get there & also seems expensive so wondering if people thought it was worth it? If so, any particular hints / tips? Thanks in advance.

It's amazing - we live about 150 miles away and have an annual pass.

We go for weekend and book into a travellodge For £19/£29z

Annual pass worth it if you would go twice in a year and also to some of the other zoos it gets you into.

Thanks for replying - what makes it so good? Is it the size, kind of animals they have? Anything in particular you would recommend doing / seeing / bringing?

I love Chester Zoo but is is big and they will get tired so plan in plenty of rest stops

also take your own food and drinks, the restaurants are very expensive and very busy

this year my DCs enjoyed the elephants, monkey house, merekats, warthogs and the dinosaurs! :)

It's huge and if you want to see it properly - it does really taken 2 days.

Must see
Orang-utan house - once when we were there there was an orang-utan in the window playing with me - he was moving his hands with mine I cried.

The elephants.

If you go before November the dino exhibition is great.

The bat cave - amazing.

Elephants.

Butterfly house - I cried with the beauty (get the idea I cry).

It's known as the zoo without bars.

Don't bother with the train thing.

If you do go there is a hungry horse quite close I can't remember name but Dh will in morning.

We usually have a cooked breakfast innclose by harvester (share with kids too mean to buy for them).

Share a baked sweet potato in there (yum) and eat at hungry goes (share with kids too mean to buy f

To buy for them.

The DCs love it there and so do I.

Thanks so much guys - sounds good, think we'll definitely make the effort although really can only go for 1 day so will do what we can in the time Grin

Went with my nearly 6, nearly 4 and 14m old a fortnight ago! Saw most of it in 6 hour day. Hired a double buggy for £10 and totally worth it. Could even strap baby onto me and push bigger ones in it to the zebras. Mine loved the elephants, penguins, giraffes, bats and dinosaurs best. Didn't have a problem buying food, and it was a weekend in the school hols.

Go!

Thanks all. We're going to go today although looks like rain for this afternoon - I presume it's still fine in the rain with plenty to see & do without getting soaked?

yes there is plenty to do inside, perhaps, aquarium, orangatans, butterflys, elephants, bat cave, lots of the monkeys, umm there is plenty more, just inside gate is a guest information thing, they can help you plan one to the next thing to do. Dinosaurs are worth getting wet for.

I loved it.

Thought the food was OK, DD had a jumbo hot dog for £3 and I had a really lovely sandwich for about the same price.

bloodyfurious · 15/08/2012 10:39

the sweet potato in the pub thing is really nice

iloveACK · 15/08/2012 17:50

We've had a brill day - took a picnic & even managed to eat it outside without getting too wet!

Thanks all Grin

Glad you enjoyed it. For others you can get cheaper tickets by getting them at the info booth at Cheshire Oaks, which is on our way. Thinking about it tho we should probably buy an annual pass as we seem to go quite often.

bloodyfurious · 16/08/2012 09:37

we have an annual pass, we think 3 trips pays for itself then, and you get 20% discount in shops and discount on food as well as entrance to other zoos we are off to Newquay and Paington.
