Shade in the back seat for babies/children

LizziePizzie · 13/08/2012 10:27

I am having a debate with my DH about whether to take the sun shade on the back seat down so my 2yo DD can look out the window. I say no, i want to leave it there as it is more important to protect her from the sun than have a view, and my husband disagrees. i can't find anything online to back me up so i am turning to you for help!

thoughts please...

I never bothered with a shade at all. DD 20mths is fine.

noramum · 13/08/2012 10:37

We had one of these roll-up ones so if the sun wasn't directly in DD's face she could see out.

If we knew that it was nearly nap-time or she was likely to nod off then we would close it otherwise she would say something if necessary.

good idea - i'll look into that... DD is getting to the age she can communitcate better...

the roller blind ones aren't a great idea as in an accident they can detach and injure someone.

what about something like the window-sox... she should be able to see through those

LizziePizzie · 13/08/2012 11:18

window sox - interesting... just googled them. not sure my DH would like them. What about the ones that stretch to fit the windows?

What do you want to protect her from? Most glass in cars has uv filters in (windscreen certainly does) so I can't see a safety protection.

Obviously she might not be comfortble with the sun shining on her, but you can try it and see.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/08/2012 11:20

Take them down and put a hat on her.

MrsHoarder · 13/08/2012 11:25

I was hoping this would explain why I should consider buying one for DS. THey puzzle me tbh: the sun is something we evolved in the presence of and he should be able to cope with a bit of it through UV filtering glass.

Window sox are fantastic? What is not to like? They are temporary !!! They keep the sun out when it is sunny, clear enough to see through for the child (and driver when reversing) and you can still open the window. I have had them for both cars since having DC.

LizziePizzie · 13/08/2012 11:50

Jareth - I wish that would work in the mid-day sun whilst outside playing, let alone in the car!

I don't like the sun beating down on me in a car when I can't escape it, so I don't want my DD to be in the same situation. She is such a wonderful traveller I don't want to spoil it.

I will have a think about tempory ones that I can only put up when its either very sunny, or when in 'sleep mode'.

FYI - I have the peel on/peel off ones at the moment.

I hate having the sun in my face so why should my child have it?

A hat is not a good solution in the car as I find the hair gets wet and sticky and it can't be very comfortable when sleeping.

The roll-up and accidents:every item in the car can be dangerous if you are in an accident. I think there is more danger from flying bottles, CDs, toys or incorrect fitted car seats. When I see what people (with or without children) have lying around in the car I sometimes wonder if they know what would happen with the cute looking Churchill on the boot cover if you have a serious frontal accident.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/08/2012 12:08

Sunglasses?

LizziePizzie · 13/08/2012 12:43

Sunglasses get chewed, twised, dropped and are more like sunglass shapped toy rather than a piece of equipment to protect her eyes!

i guess you have all hit the nail on the head with there is no right answer, what ever works best for child, parent, car and situation!

(although i am now going to assess the gear in my car for objects that could turn into wepons when in an accident!

noramum yes you are right! anything will become a projectile in a crash. there was a case of a small boy in the US being killed by his sippy cup :(

so basically anything you can do to reduce that risk is good... including not using roller blinds on the windows!

another alternative if your husband doesn't like the idea of the window-sox would be something like this
