Mobile homes/ French campsites

Hi there
Just back from first ever French campsite hol (Pointe St Gilles in Benodet with Keycamp)

We enjoyed it v much but I must say I got really tired of the piddly-sized mobile home. My sisters family were there too, and her mobile was bigger than ours despite booking the same type.

Is there a secret to getting a decent mobile? Did she slip the chap €20 when I wasn't looking? Are any companies better than others??

Would love advice from those with experience.

the brochures/websites have the dimensions on. having had the same experience as you the first year, thereafter we always booked the largest mobiles. i also look at the site reviews and on ukcampsites, to try and gauge how big the pitches are as this can make a big difference too.

all companies have a range of sizes. i normally get quotes from a few as they vary slightly cost wise. some have dishwashers.

i don't see how hers could have been bigger though if it was the same type. it would be like saying someone's ford smax is larger than mine???

Hi

It was deeper IYKWIM. She swore her rooms were smaller but I don't think so!!Hmm

They were both villanovas but had a different layout. I got a bit obsessed towards the end of our stay, there are definately 2 different layouts.

I think next year I'll spend more on the mobile and not waste money on kids clubs, which my kids didn't use- older DS was too shy, younger DS has SN.

Oh, pitch size was fine BTW, in case anyone is searching for reviews. Reasonable patio plus BBQ space, car parking and a hedge between us & next mobile.

Always go for the best/largest you can afford in my experience. Last summer we had a Siblu Excellence - it was fantastic and even had a washing machine. You couldn/t swing a cat in the Esprit mobile we had book previously.

we went to Point St Gilles with key camp last month

I also saw that they had villa nova 2 bed 1 bathroom homes, and some were clearly much bigger than others. (I had a good nose through the windows of the empty homes)

we were lucky and got a larger one (no idea why as we did ours though sun holidays and only paid £169 for the week!)

yes layouts can very, but if you look at their models online you will find overall outside mobile dimensions will be the same.

on some sites the pitches can be really squashed - especially near beaches - so suggest you check this as well. we've had mobiles that are adjacent to others and you can hear children running around in them. didn't affect us, but if you were adjacent to a noisy family that gets up at the crack of dawn could be a problem

we have used eurocamp, eurosites, keycamp and canvas holidays and apart from keycamp who could never get us across the channel (despite me provisionally booking before brochures were released) we have found them to be pretty similar.

all explained here.

I was at the same place as OP just 3 weeks ago

there were at least 3 versions of the "2 bed 1 bathroom + decking" villa nova..... and the one we had looked nothing like on that website.

If you don't use the kids clubs and space is an issue for you why not rent a gite instead. If you go with your sister you could get a place with its own pool for the same or less than the mobile homes.

Portofino · 13/08/2012 13:25

Agree with frenchfancy - I thought the mobile prices were high this year and we rented a lovely gite on a complex with shared pool, games barn etc for less than the price of a mobile home.

I thought I was reading one of my old threads for a moment there! We went to Pointe St Gilles at the end of July and loved it. We had a 3 bedroom mobile home and it was big enough for the four of us. We did choose the biggest sort they had though and went with Eurocamp.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 13/08/2012 19:30

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think the gite sounds good. We did enjoy the on-site facilities... Surely there is somewhere that combines the 2!! I've been looking at the siblu site, but won't be booking anything for at least 10 months!!
