When to book flight to Canada & what's a reasonable price

We will be four; me, DH, DS (~3.3), DD (~1.7).

It will be a 10 hour flight and I am looking to go next Apr/May sort of time. I have looked at flights today for first three weeks of May and can get flights from well-known carriers for about £3,250 (approx £810 avg per person).

  1. Is this pants, considering I don't really want to budget airline it with two little ones, 2) if I waited longer would I get a better price with these kinds of airlines?

I'd appreciate any comments or advice - many thanks!

Have you tried skyscanner or kayak to search for flights?

I'm currently watching flights to NY and Florida for December, the prices seem to fluctuate daily. I'd be tempted to book as soon as you see a price you're happy to pay.

Thanks for the kayak tip - much more flexible.

If you're sure you want to avoid budget airlines then I guess that's not too bad a price, but we fly annually and always book through Canadian Affair as Air Canada and BA are out of our budget. :)

Canadian Affair's flights are generally either with Air Transat or Thomas Cook Airlines, so "no frills" Grin

In 2011 (for flights outbound in March, back in April) we paid GBP1750 and for our last return trip in July 2012 (booked in Jan) it cost GBP2500 for our family of 4 (Calgary/Manchester)

Thanks lazydog - sorry didn't check for replies for a while. I will bear in mind - M&D are flying with Transat soon actually, so I could wait and ask them.

I fly to Canada yearly and have always booked through Canadian affair. They are often slagged on here as they are 'no frills' but in all my years with them, I've never had any problems. This year they were very helpful when I was with 6mnth old dd. they made sure I had an extra seat next to me to allow her to sleep etc. they honestly went over and above to help out!

We went end April/ start of may and for 3 adults and dd, total cost was aprox £1200 (dd flight was 'free' but still have to pay airport tax)

My tip is to check their website daily as they often have offers. We have found April/may to be the cheapest so you may be in luck. The flights work well with us (Glasgow to Toronto) as family are then only a few hours drive away. Flight is about 7 hours direct. Only other way is to go Glasgow-Amsterdam-Detroit which gets us in closer to family home, but doubles the airport and flight time, plus cost is usually double!!
