we are thinking of booking this for sept . Has anyone been and what's it like? it sounds lovely and seem very reasonable for MW - is there a reason for this?

thanks all!

To add to my previous - Obviously we can all be sure that something sad happened there, I hope that my post didn't come across as meaning anything else.

HomeEcoGnomist · 13/08/2012 23:24

We have just come back from a week there.

I am composing my complaint to MW tomorrow.

Tbh, I don't think it's cheap(er) because of the McCann incident - I only overheard one pair idly wondering where the apartment was - but because it's dawning on people that MW is really rather overrated

Shocking customer service, terrible flights - 9 hours at Faro airport anyone? - so-so meals...not really worth it and I wouldn't recommend it

NoComet · 14/08/2012 00:00

Went to Portugal just before poor Maddie.

Not a patch on Majorca the restaurants are just painfully slow and it's just not as friendly. Not being on the Med the sea isn't as calm either.

Only plus point beautiful big beaches with space to play ball games etc.

MiniMonty · 14/08/2012 01:35

Mark Warner = Major Wrip off in a very polite way !
Go for it luv - I did it once and I am now much the wiser...

For the price you could HIRE A YACHT (with chef and crew)
you could have a FIVE STAR holiday in Spain or Italy.

It's your money...

thebestisyettocome · 14/08/2012 10:26

So it isn't just me who thought Mark Warner are utterly crap. Good luck with the complaint HomeEcoGnomist but if you're case is dealt with by the same man who I spoke to you'll get nowhere. He was a pompous 'never apologise, never explain' type who isn't interested in listening to his customers.
marilynmonroe If I were you I'd have a look online at the H10 chain of hotels, especially the Lanzarote Princess. They are all pretty good and reasonable value too.

HomeEcoGnomist · 14/08/2012 13:03

I came to the conclusion that there is in fact only one person in customer services, so he gets to call himself the manager! I am not really expecting to get anywhere but I am going to plague him in the meantime Wink
And add my comments all over the Internet...

marilynmonroe · 14/08/2012 19:31

i just got an email from mark warner today with offers but it had obviously not been proof read. offers for rhodes with a description of corsica below it etc.

shall i call them and ask for a major discount for noticing all the mistakes?!!

HomeEcoGnomist · 14/08/2012 20:36

Haha Marilyn - good luck with that one! They are tighter than a gnat's chuff Grin

DontmindifIdo · 14/08/2012 21:17

Re MW Portugal - a policewoman I know pointed out that it'll be the safest resort in Portugal now - the staff will be on alart in a way nowhere else will be.

however, it doesn't have aircon. Lack of aircon put us off for the med in the summer. (DH is a nightmare if he can't sleep because he's too hot)

HomeEcoGnomist · 14/08/2012 21:56

I'm not so sure that 'alert' would be my description of them, but I take the general point!

FWIW, aircon wasn't so much of an issue.
The sea is actually the Atlantic - so it was freezing. That was disappointing as I could only go ankle deep

dreamingofsun · 14/08/2012 22:08

what about france in a mobile home? OK not the most luxurious accommodation, but they have dishwashers and lots of facilities on the sites and kidies clubs and loads for them to do as well as make friends? we loved this sort of holiday when our kids were younger. in france, so you get all the lovely food and wine

marilynmonroe · 15/08/2012 08:01

dreamingofthesun - what company did you go with?

canvas holidays, eurcamp, eurosites, keycamp. they are all pretty similar except that keycamp normally struggled to get us across the channel, despite me provisionally booking before the brochures were released. they may have improved since.

if you want help ref brittany and sites there i'm happy to help. its like cornwall but with better weather and less tat. s brittany has best weather but obviously not totally reliable.

as you can see with energetic, sporty kids this worked out as a good holiday for us and we did it for about 10 years or so. we preferred it to a guite as we also liked having tennis courts, a bar, restaurants on site.

conorsrockers · 15/08/2012 09:32

We went to Egypt last month with Thomson, got all inclusive for 11 nights at a 4* - cost was just under 4.5k for 5 of us. The kids club was absolutely brilliant - food OK (it's Egypt so have to be realistic!). Would highly recommend Thomson - customer service for the whole holiday, flights, trips etc... was top quality.

HomeEcoGnomist · 16/08/2012 18:56

I know this is slightly off topic, but thought you might be interested to know that MW replied to my complaint today...

They started by telling me I didn't have a compensation claim... But then enclosed a voucher towards my next holiday Confused
Goodwill, apparently

Given they have never previously conceded the need to give anything, I spot a chink in their armour! I will keep going...

dreamingofsun · 16/08/2012 19:13

have you approached ABTA. Years ago we had an issue with a travel company and they had an arbitration service which was free. not sure if it still exists, but might be worth checking. I cc'ed all my letters to the travel company to them.

thebestisyettocome · 16/08/2012 19:15

How much did they give you in compensation if you don't mind me asking. Maybe they've read this thread.

HomeEcoGnomist · 16/08/2012 20:00

Thanks Dreaming, I haven't involved ABTA yet, as it's the first stage of my campaign Wink if I don't get any joy, i'll ramp it up

The voucher was for £200 - 6.8% of the holiday cost. I am underwhelmed

Pattypooped · 19/08/2012 01:18

We came back from the ALgarve today. We stayed at Lagos but visited Praia da Luz twice.

I was reluctant to go to Luz, not because I was worried but because I have two daughters and was very upset about what happened to Madeleine Mccann at the time. I was persuaded to go for the afternoon and once I'd got over it being 'that' resort, I found it a very likeable and child friendly place, such that we returned a few days later for drinks on the beach.

I probably couldn't cope with staying at the MW resort, I'd find it too sad TBH but the luz area itself is really nice.

The sea was indeed freezing at Luz, however much warmer in other places such as Lagos, which is just up the road (I cannot account for why this would be). The food in Portugal was generally OK but the children's food was awful (I know, I know, they should eat what we eat - but my kids don't go a bundle on the whole octopus thing that's so prevalent in the Algarve!).

We stayed in a ground floor apartment we found through 'Owners Abroad.' I was wary of staying on the ground floor but felt the first floor more risky with a curious 3 year old that cannot be trusted not to climb. The owners assured me it was very safe (it had fences around it and a locked gate), however two men were witnessed trying to break into our apartment at 4am during the first week by pulling up the shutters. They were disturbed by a neighbour. I was completely freaked out and hardly slept any night after that. We ended up wedging everything with broom handles to prevent a break-in.

For the money you spend, I'd rather go independently. We paid £3,200 for four of us - this included flights with Monarch, 14 days car hire from the airport and a lovely two bedroomed apartment with shared pools (lovely apart from the security issue, obviously!). I would go back, and we toyed with Praia da Luz as somewhere to stay next year but we think there's more going on in Lagos.

I'd never stay in a ground floor (or otherwise accessible) apartment again though. We ALWAYS fully locked all windows and doors and had all the shutters fully closed but according to the neighbours this would not deter intruders as they can force the shutters up against the motor and lift the non-moving patio door up to remove it from the frame. The way to prevent this is to place batteries along the top of the frame to narrow the gap in which it can be lifted.

FrameyMcFrame · 21/08/2012 12:47

I think it's cheaper and better to just put the holiday together yourself. Get budget flights, hire a lovely villa with pool with all the money you saved!
We are in Menorca this week and did it for under 2.5k with 4 of us, flights were 400 in total with sleazyjet, but then we have gorgeous villa near beach with pool and hire car.
I looked at loads of packages, with Mark Warner, Thomas cook etc but the prices are shocking!

marilynmonroe · 21/08/2012 20:41

Thanks for replies. I think we have ruled out mw in Portugal. We are still going to book something last minute. Maybe through Thomson or the Rhodes mw.

As for the ideas of a villa. I think we will do that another year. This year we just want to relax and have a few hrs a day to ourselves. It's been a tough year so want be able to completely relax!
