Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help me out here with some info! My DC was born in london this month and I'm trying to get her a passport.
Me and my husband are portuguese and do not hold a british passport. Anyway, we are now considered settled in the UK because we've lived here for more than 5 years. I've been told that my child does have the right to have a british passport, but not sure what documents do I need to get her one.
Can anyone clarify the process for me, please?

I thought British nationality came from parents' nationality, and is irrespective of where you are born. So if neither you nor your husband are British then neither is your child, she is Portuguese surely? Might be wrong though.....

A quick google and a look at the home office website says your child can apply for British citizenship if you are regarded as settled (so this is your normal residence). The easiest way to apply is through your nearest Nationalisty checking service and the fee is £551

Once she is a British citizen then she can apply for a passport I would think.

Thanks for the answers...
OddBoots, that was the process I had to go trough for my first DC, because he was born before we were considered "settled", before the necessary 5 years. This time around I've been told it should be different exactly because we are now considered settled...so that's why I'm in doubt regarding what documents I need.

Hi, this link should answer your questions (section 2/page 7). If you already have PR (one or both of you) child is automatically BC, if not you can get PR, then register child as BC. Hope this helps Smile

Sorry! PR - Permanent Residence, BC - British citizen

DD (5 years) was born in London to two German parents. She got a British passport.

We didn't apply for residency, we just filled out the application and send it together with a couple of pounds paperwork.

DH phoned the passport hot line and was advised that you need to be in the UK for a "reasonable amount of time" and support yourself. We send letters from our employers, mortgage and saving statements, P60s for 5 years and council tax statements.

Not sure if this has changed but we as parents are still solely German but DD has two nationalities now.

But we made sure that we had the German passport first as Germany can be difficult when applying for a second passport. So I would make sure your child has the Portuguese paperwork done first. For this you need to contact your Embassy to see what is required.

If you can send all the paperwork to the Passport Office instead of UKBA, than I would definitely do that. The paperwork that noramum sent to the Passport Office is what you would need for Permanent Residence, but the IPS is likely to be easier to deal with than UKBA.

I'm an EU national, have four kids, two of them was born before I gained Permanent Resident Permit Uk and the other two was born after I gained the PR. I applied for British passport for four of them but two who were born after I gained PR was granted while the other two born before I gained PR was denied. Please can you advise on the what document to provide or required to get them British passport?

I hold a Portuguese passport and my partner a Brazilian passport our children were both porn here in the uk and both hold British passports all we did was to fill out the application forms and send it with their birth certificates
