Hotel in York near Rail Museum?

We've only been living in the UK for a few months as yet and we fancy a weekend trip soon (before Easter, hopefully) to visit national rail museum in York with 3.5 yr old ds. Any suggestions for decent hotels/guest houses (with a room that can hold 3 people) near the train station and the museum? We'd be taking a train up from London; we could rent a car there if necessary but would rather not if we shouldn't have to.
Thanks!

The Hilton is very central, round the corner from the Yorvik Viking Centre and within walking distance from the train station, \link{http://www.hilton.co.uk/york\link to hilton york website}. Alternatively try the local tourist information office

There's one actually attached to the railway station, \link{http://www.e-travelguide.info/royalyork/index.htm\The Royal York Hotel} . Couldn't be handier, but I can't vouch for what it's like, though I always did like the look of it. My Mum used to go there in the 1940's & her mum before that, but a 60-year-old-plus review wouldn't be much good I'm sure, Smile.

the royal york hotel is lovely, if you can afford it i would def stay there. alternatvley york has hotels like travel lodge that are cheap and cheerful and quite new. and the novotel is another cheap hotel, that has a nice restaurant and pool, which is always handy when you have children.

most places centrally in york are within walking distance of the train station, it is actually quite a small city, taxis are very cheap too, a taxi from the train station to the novotel is about £5!

my dh is from york and i lived there for 4 years before moving back down south, all dh's fmaily still live in york and we visit regularly, i think that if your 3 y.o likes trains he will love the railway museum, he is probably a bit young for the jorvik centre yet, but castle museum is good as well.

plenty of nice shops for you, try and get a cream tea in bettys tea shop too, lovely cakes and they have a shop so you can buy far too many naughty goodies! our favourite resaturant always used to be a lovely littel italiann the shambles (another tourist attratction, a really narrow littel alleyway of houses/shops that lean together)called reastaute bari, very friendly towards children and you cans ee into the kitchen. york also has the usual suspects for estaurants, pizza express etc, def not short of good qulaity laces to eat.

talking about this almost makes me wnat to go back, much nicer than reading for nights out, shame its so close to my in laws!LOL!

Station is reasonably central and lots to do in the city so absoulutely no reason to hire a car. Besides the railway museum you could go to the Minster, go for a walk on the walls, go for a boat trip in the river, play in the musuem gardens etc. I agree that he is probably a bit young for the Jorvik centre.

Actually my DH is staying in York city centre tonight - I think in a travel inn. I know it is central though because it is a night out with a group from work.

we had a lovely spring break at the Moathouse in Yark. The hotel was lovely child friendly especially at breakfast. we had a 4 berth room one double one sofa bed. we had a river view and the children loved looking at the rowers and crusing boats going up and down. A nice view to sit and have a drink when kids in bed. Another tip we went to a wonderful italian resturant called La Piazza 45 Goodramgate the food was great and it had a lovely courtyard at the back where you could eat el fresco we went early evening and very child friendly.

The Dean Court Hotel is next to the Minster, not the railway museum, but there is a bus dressed as a train which picks up outside the hotel and takes you right to the museum! Our kids loved it!

Hey everybody, thanks so much for the great clues. I'll look up the suggestions and see what they say about themselves (and who's been refurbished when Smile. Thanks for restaurant ideas, too! Especially since they're Italian! More clues are definitely welcome, too -- it's great. We may decide to splurge and stay someplace central that's fancy, since we'd only be paying for 1 or 2 nights; dh may prefer to go that route this time, even though we usually try to go cheapish.
