Tonight my DD aged 3 has fell off a swing and dislocated and broken her elbow, she's in so much pain and we're due to go to Spain in 6 days, any tips or advice? Can she fly? Any tips on how she can still paddle in the pool? How to stop it itching with the heat etc?

I flew to westcoast USA 10 days after I broke my arm, can't remember exactly but it wasn't too hard to clear with airline, think the onus was on me to make sure I was safe to fly.

Is she in a cast? Painkillers as allowed, I'd think. My hurt a lot too, but I managed.

Plastic bag with elastic bands around a cast if she has one for paddling.

DS1 did exactly the same thing when he was 6! He had to have an operation and pins in on the Sunday and we were due to leave on the following Friday. You need to find out how the airline feels about full casts, there is a worry that the limb will swell in whilst you are flying and this can be dangerous. If it is a recent fracture though she will probably have a split cast or backslab. Have a word with them about fiberglass casts with a lining that can get wet, we had this and DS1 was able to go in the water as long as we drained it properly (wearing a lifejacket as he couldn't swim properly Grin). We were travelling by ferry though so there wasn't the swelling issue, I think this is the first thing you need to find out about. Good luck.

We had one of these as well just in case.

I was in a full cast, but they are kind of unusual nowadays. There is such a thing as a split cast, it sort of hinges on and off as needed. They try not to cast at all

She's in a temporary cast which is plaster on top and soft underneath, I have to phone fracture clinic first thing Monday morning for an appointment, her initial appointment was Thursday but that's when we fly, the airline say a split cast if put on less than 48 hours before flying, will the doctors agree to that?

Keeping her dosed up on painkillers and we've been to toys r us for a "being brave" present

I was looking at one of those lostin, lloyds pharmacy stock something similar, are they effective? I'll ask about a fibreglass one, we also need a fit to fly certificate and to inform our insurers I've been told?

I'm not sure about the flying business as we drive everywhere! You will definitely need to tell your insurers other wise she would not be covered if anything goes wrong with it on holiday.

Your best bet is to get on the phone to fracture clinic and beg and beg on Monday. Pop in a well timed snivel as well if you need to Wink The cast we had that could get wet was on a trial at my local hospital but that was 6 years ago now so I'm not sure if they will be everywhere. The hospital were incredibly helpful so I hope yours will be too. Get the tightest possible waterproof cast cover as well, at least that was the advice we got.

In work mode now (radiographer), you need to be careful with casts on aeroplanes as the arm can swell with the different pressures so a split cast or half cast like she has now will be better but then it also needs to be supportive so she can heal well, she'll need that elbow joint to work well for quite some time yet. You could always join us on the ferry, we're going on Friday Grin

What a shame! Sorry to hear that. Hope all goes to plan and you all have a lovely holiday.

Thanks, we've told the insurers who say its fine as long as we've got a fit to fly certificate, the earliest appointment we could get at fracture clinic is 9am tomorrow morn so it's going to have to be a split cast I think, printing the airlines guidelines to take with me!
