Europe in October for 3yo and 6mo?

Hi everyone... i'm struggling a bit for holiday ideas and wondered if I could pick your brains before setting foot into the high pressure sales den that is the average high street travel agents please?

We have just received our children's passports and are keen to use them. We have a 3.5yo who has a few special needs (think ADHD but from brain injury) and a new baby who will be 6mo in October.

we were hoping to go on our first family holiday abroad, as the 3yo has been medically unfit to fly until this spring just gone - however we've just found out he has a school based nursery place somewhere they are very very hot on attendance so it's got to be in half term (husband can't get time off before sept).

luckily we have some inset days before proper half term so could go on thurs 25th october and come back any time up to sun 4th november.

we are only allowed to go short haul because of the 3yo's lungs (long haul cabin pressures are too low). we will probably be paying an astronomical amount in travel insurance.

so, where do you recommend for a very busy 3.5yo who loves running, climbing, trains and busses, and who hasn't done much swimming yet? our new baby is bf and should be starting weaning about then, but still relatively portable.

i'd love a sunny beach holiday but don't think the kids would cope anywhere too warm... a pool woudl be nice, a kids club would be great (i have fond memories from my own childhood) but hte most important thing is finding somewhere that the 3.5yo could be fenced in - as he likes to run and is a great escape artist.

I was thinking mallorca / minorca / greek islands sort of thing for a bit of winter sun, but i'm not sure there is a lot there for him to do. how can we get a bit of relaxation and away-from-the-office time but still have fun with him? we are itching to get out of the uk as we have not been allowed to fly since I was 3 months pg with the first one - so almost 4 years!

thanks all, and sage advice welcome.
