What do you put in insect bites once you've been bitten?

(I've bought everything mentioned on the recent thread about preventing bites!).

Anthisan

FreelanceMama · 28/07/2012 22:41

I had an Australian colleague who recommended spit, for mozzy bites. Bit gross, but in the absence of anything to hand it seems to help. Whatever you do, don't scratch it though.

Dizzykizzy · 28/07/2012 22:43

I swear by Germolene (sp?)...

ripsishere · 29/07/2012 06:55

Tiger balm

BellaOfTheBalls · 29/07/2012 06:56

Hydrocortisone 1%

TeaandHobnobs · 29/07/2012 07:37

Eurex, or the shop's own brand equivalent (i.e. boots insect and bite relief cream)

Relieves the itching.

TeaandHobnobs · 29/07/2012 07:37

Eurax even...

mrspink27 · 29/07/2012 07:39

Vinegar or tiger balm. Also while travelling pick up the locally used cream/lotion/potion as this often works better on "regional" insects.
Really try and not get bitten in the first place by using good repellent!

peggyblackett · 29/07/2012 07:41

Anthisan is crap for me. Germolene is good, as are those after bite pens.

Bunbaker · 29/07/2012 15:25

Hydrocortisone. It works.

marriednotdead · 29/07/2012 15:40

I find Anthisan good for rashes but crap for mozzie bites. The action of rubbing the cream in seems to spread the bite further into the skin.

Will be watching with interest. Prevention has been key for me.

WelshMoth · 29/07/2012 15:44

Has the poster come back to give feedback about 'Smidge' yet? In terms of prevention, that is.

Sorry for hijacking OP Smile

treadonthecracks · 29/07/2012 17:50

Welsh moth - smidge? What's that please - I'm interested.

Married not dead, have I got your prevention tips? So far I have:

Deet - jungle formula

Oh, only now seeing this.

Hang on, I'll go look for the thread talking about it.

Follyfoot · 29/07/2012 21:52

Hairdryer. It stops the itching like magic.

WelshMoth · 29/07/2012 21:53

Not the actual thread I was hoping to find, but this one may interest you.

PuppyMonkey · 29/07/2012 21:55

Hydrocortisone. I put it on everything. Grin

treadonthecracks · 29/07/2012 21:58

Thank you.

I will get some germoline and hydrocortisine.

I suppose the hair drier dries it up, will give that a go too.

WelshMoth · 29/07/2012 21:58

A-ha! Got it.

treadonthecracks · 29/07/2012 22:23

Fab I'm ordering it.

I have some tiger balm so I'll throw that in my bag too.

Thank you all.

those clicky things are good if you do it asap after you've been bitten

\link{http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Bite-Sting-relief-Click-it_8212/\Boots one}

\link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/EcoBrands-E001-Ecobrands-Zapperclick/dp/B000KU74K4\Zapper from amazon}

aldi sells the zappers sometimes, for a lot less than that, but I don't know if they have any left

treadonthecracks · 29/07/2012 22:31

Thanks ponders I don't usually notice until the middle of the night when I can't get back to sleep for itching.

OP posts:
Ponders · 29/07/2012 22:35

I think they do also work as relief later on - my DSs like them a lot, DS1 discovered that they work best on a fresh bite (daytime, obv) when the bite is still lumpy, but they certainly cut itching later too

worth getting one if you come across some before you go

hope you manage to dodge the bullets though! Smile

Follyfoot · 29/07/2012 22:37

You need to put your hairdryer on warm/hot and point it at the bite. It will get incredibly itchy, then really hot. When it feels too hot, stop. The itching will have gone and the best thing is it lasts ages. If it starts again, just point the hairdryer at it once more.

Its a tip from a Dr mate who lived in The Bahamas and used to be plagued by sand fly bites.

Hydrocortisone is brilliant for taking the inflammation away as has been said.

mummymeister · 30/07/2012 21:19

WE use the bite stick that you dab on and it smells like wee (from Boots). also eat less sugary things and drink less sugary drinks to reduce number of bites. Have also used perfume on bites as it takes the sting out of them (not sure why or if it is just me it works on!!)
