Pushchairs when flying

Does anyone know if I will be allowed to take my Bugaboo with carrycot on a flight? DD3 is only 3 months old so not old enough for the pushchair seat yet. It says on the website we're allowed "a fully collapsible stroller", but we don't have one! (It can be folded down flat.)

I would check with travel agent but no i dont think u would be able to unless u could store it in over head lockers....

You can sometimes take car seat and strap it to plane seat, i think? is it compatible with a smaller buggy? just a thought

I suspect not in the cabin - when they say collapsible they mean an umbrella fold buggy like a Maclaren. I have just been to NZ and back with a Maclaren XT and got it on as hand luggage but I had to do some persuasion.
You would I'm sure be able to take the bugaboo as hold luggage but I would worry about it getting damaged - especially the carrycot. Perhaps you could wrap it up securely in plastic to protect it? They'll take the chassis though I'm sure

went to palma with easy jet and they let you keep buggy until you actually went throuhg plane door, it was then last thing in luggage so not mangled(not mine, i hired one over there)..go onto airlines website, they will give you more info.
if you are taking a car seat, it needs to be suitable for airoplanes if you want to strap it in, plus, you would have to pay for the seat you strap it into!

Friends brought theirs over by air in December but their baby was in the pushcair bit. Not aware they had any problems. Does the carrycot flatten or do you need to remove it to collapse ?

kando · 07/03/2006 09:08

The carrycot needs to be removed from chassis, but it can be flattened too. It's def too big for cabin. Was planning on using it right up to boarding the plane then collapsing it and handing it over, hopefully meaning that it will be the last thing to go on plane and therefore not get damaged!

didn't realise the carrycot collapsed - should be fine then.

I would still take something to put the collapsed cot in (e.g. strong plastic bag of some sort) before they take it away - chances are it'll be fine but bugaboos are very expensive so I'd be extra careful (can you tell I don't totally trust airlines with my stuff - from bitter experience I'm afraid!)

Never tried before, but did get asked last time when leaving is the pram was in two bits in case I needed two luggage tags for it so it sounded like they would have let me take it all the way to the plane even if it did.
I would be worried about the way they handle them though, never had a big problem myself but did have foam on the handle of a chep pram ripped on one flight and would have hated it to have happened to a good pram.
You don't usually take the pram on board just leave it at the door when you get on board and get it back when you collect your luggage so might be worth taking a sling for he walk to the baggage reclaim if nothing else.

last time I travelled with a two piece travel system they lost half of it, so I had a set of wheels and no carrycot for 3 days. Luckly it was on the way home, but Stanstead to Cornwall via train and tube was hard work with a three month old babe.

Just to add 2 things. When I flew to Gib - I took my 18m with stroller. Took it right up to the plane, and then they stuck it on as luggage. great. However when we came back - it came off the plane as baggage, and we had to carry her a zillion miles from the gate to baggage collection (walking still wobbly) and it was a nightmare. Noone told me that it wouldn't be available upon arrival. So bring a sling, jic.

Also - saw someones carseat fall off back of luggage truck onto tarmac - and it was just checked back onto the luggage. They do not treat anyone's luggage with care. Be careful what you pu in the hold if it's precious.
