they wont actually fine you until november 2012 so you could get by without them as until then there is no penalty

CokeFan · 21/07/2012 21:45

Amazon sell them too.

Quejica · 21/07/2012 22:32

And Halfords do

CestTout · 23/07/2012 13:16

And they have them in the WH Smith at Dover Port!

CMOTDibbler · 23/07/2012 13:19

yes, but cheaper at Halfords

Indith · 23/07/2012 13:20

Yes you can, they were already selling themin June when we went. Law come into being this month but they won't be enforcing it until November. Remember you need 2 to be legal as if you only have 1 and get pulled over and asked to use one then the instant you drive off you are illegal!

shrimponastick · 24/07/2012 13:57

I imagine youwill be able to purchase them at all ferry terminals and eurotunnel terminal etc. Maybe on board the ferry too.

I bought a double pack through Amazon - I think they were about £4.

Did fancy buying a bumper pack and having drinking party fun with them until I saw the prices :)

ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/07/2012 14:03

Am I missing something here?

What law is coming into force?

CMOTDibbler · 24/07/2012 14:09

Its now compulsory to carry disposable breathalysers when driving in France Chaos

ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/07/2012 14:11

Thanks CMOT.

We're off to France in a few weeks, so good to know.

Can you link to further info?

Ponders · 24/07/2012 14:16

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-18662555\BBC}

'Under the rules, which exclude mopeds, drivers who fail to produce a breathalyser after 1 November will face a fine of 11 euros.'

BarefootShirl · 24/07/2012 14:20

Law does not come in until 1 Nov but drivers are being advised to carry them from now as French police can be arseholes over-enthusiastic when dealing with British foreign drivers. Twin pack is available at Halfords for about £5-6.

Ponders · 24/07/2012 14:21

I believe you're supposed to have your high-vis vest in the glovebox too.

I'd only ever seen that it has to be "in the car" - ie not in the boot - but I read recently that it needs to be accessible without getting out; we have an estate car & had ours in a box in the luggage area last time

And you're supposed to carry a set of spare bulbs too...

It's quite a long list actually. I always imagine the officials sniggering as they put it together, in an \link{http://www.hark.com/clips/zkxgmkrffz-monty-python-elderberries"elderberries"} kind of way Grin

CMOTDibbler · 24/07/2012 14:23

Its a hi vis for each person in the car, not just one !

Ponders · 24/07/2012 14:26

so it is

but I don't think they all need to be in the glovebox? I know our glovebox wouldn't be big enough for 6 hi vis vests as well as all the other stuff that's in there. I think if the driver's is there, hi-vizzed driver can then get out & get the others Grin

Indith · 24/07/2012 15:33

yes bulbs and jackets for everyone. that stuff is common sense and should be law here too. We always have bulbs so we can change them as soon as they blow. Last time we were in france we broke down on the motorway, when you ring the breakdown lorry you are instructed to get out of the car and stand by the side of the road. Our jackets were all in a bag, easy to reach with all the other car stuff, I wouldn't want anyone to have to go in the boot looking for jackets.

you need allsorts, don't forget vehicle registration docs. If you break down you will need to show them.

We travelled the other day and you can buy breathalysers on board DFDS ferries to France. They charge £5.99 for a packet of two breathalysers in the shop and this compares very favourably with the UK high street! If you want more info on driving in France and what you need in your car, this is a helpful guide: www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-routes/ferry-to-france/Driving-tips/
