where can we have a family holiday with 3 dcs 9,6 and 10 months, with good public transport links to either Rome or Venice? beach/swimming pool, nice places to eat, not overly pricey. Not camping but dont mind caravan/chalet type places or self catering or cheapish hotel? We havent had a holiday abroad for years and i would like one next year but want to combine relaxing kid friendly beach hol with visiting one of my dream destinations. Also any tips on best times of year to go? will august be too hot?

Have you had a look at keycamp ?

They have mobile home parks all over Italy. A couple of them are near Venice too. August will be hot in Italy so I would recommend air conditioning and a swimming pool nearby.

May half term can be a good time to go but you do risk there being some rain.

We went to Venice in 2008, we didn't have DC admittedly, but we stayed at Domus Ciliota, which was literally 1 minute walk from Academia Bridge and about 5 mins from Rialto and San Marco.

We stayed there for a few days around the 17th July, so not quite the UK school hols, but I assume parts of Europe would be off then.

A twin room, en-suite with breakfast (all you could eat continental style) was 130 Euro a night. It was basic, but clean and the breakfasts were fine IMO. Their website isn't listing prices, but Kayak says £50 - £116 per night.

I know you have asked about places to stay close enough to visit, but this may be worth considering?

I think keycamp would be a good base but is it possible without a car? has anyone stayed at one and got by using buses and trains?
