I stayed at the Datai (pre ds), which is next door to the Andaman and own by the same company. Our room was big and very comfortable, and the service was very attentive. The Datai is on quite a steep hill, but the Andaman is on much flatter ground so better for kids, they are both set in the jungle and front onto a large beach. The spas are out of this world.

However I thought the restaurants were moderately expensive by UK standards (very expensive by Malaysian standards) and the food was bland (to suit the tourists I think). Apart from the Datai and the Andaman there is nothing else in the area, no shops or restaurants. The service is great so I'm sure the staff would arrange for nappies to be delivered, at a cost. As far as I could see there weren't any kids clubs or special facilities, but I think they did provide baby-sitting. Next time we go to Langkawi we are going to stay somewhere a bit more urban as we're not beach people and would have liked to have been able to walk to shops/restaurants/attractions. HTH

Bran - don't think there is anywhere "urban" in Langkawi. At least there wasn't nearly 6 years ago when we went. We hired a car for a couple of days and had trouble finding places to go. Very little outside the hotel complexes, aprt from some very beautiful scenery and lovely wild monkeys. If I remember correctly, even the capital is little more than a seaside resort. But hey, anything could have happened in the time since we were there.
We stayed at the Berjaya and don't recall seeing any children's facilities at all. Great for honeymooners though! I suppose children will make their own entertainment with pool/beach especially if there are a few of them.
Seem to remember the food was quite expensive by malaysian standards too.
You're very brave tackling that long flight with 2 littlies. Have a lovely time, Harrogate mum! Wish we were going back.

We've been to the Andaman - but 6.5 years ago.

We got a terrible room right next to the disco music that went on until 2am. But when I said they would have to move us as we had jetlag we got a much nicer room and they moved our million bags for us.

Food was bland.

We didn't want to go anywhere (only there 3 days) so that didn't bother us.

Bloomin hot!

The Andaman is lovely! We've just been for the February half-term week (stayed twice before when we were living in Asia and we've stayed at The Datai, too). No disco, only cabaret singer who stops before midnight every night - but the good restaurants are well away from that.

I'm suprised people found the food bland - the Malaysian/Indian restaurant in the rainforest, The Gulai House, is fab, and the Thai Pavilion at The Datai is fantastic, and will up the spice level according to your preference (you can eat at restaurants from either hotel and cross sign. The walk along the beach or through the rainforest before and after dinner is very relaxing.) The restaurants are expensive, though.

The Andaman is much better for children than The Datai. The pool area is very well laid out, with islands, bridges, a small slide and lots of shade. We love it when the monitor lizards swim across the pool and the kingfishers dive down for drinks. The children love seeing the monkeys at dusk, as well as the hornbills, sea eagles, butterflies, flying squirrels and colugos, crabs, fish swimming round your ankles at low tide....The guided evening and morning forest walks are well worth taking.

There is also now a kids' club at The Andaman, though we didn't use it (free, I think).

The spa is beautifully located and the beach is soft and sandy - beach toys available to borrow free of charge from the watersports kiosk.

We really couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Other friends in Asia also recommend Tanjung Rhu on Langkawi, but I haven't been.
