We have been to Egypt (First Choice holiday village) for the past 2 years. Have had a great time. Wouldn't have been our ideal holiday pre-DC (5yo) but she has loved it, and we have too.

I'm sorely tempted to re-book but there are a couple of negatives- beach isn't sandy (and I'm still paranoid about sharks after Oct 2010 issues) which limits beach fun, gets dark very early (as it is their winter), not much to do in evenings.

I would love recommendations for something else- the AI type really suits us, DD actually loves the kids clubs for a couple of hours each day (I like the fact that some are run by the tour operator rather than the hotel- they feel more reliable somehow). It would be nice if there was some fun stuff to do too.

We don't have a huge budget- we usually manage to come in around £2,300.00 for 10 days

Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

How about the Canary Islands?
I think there are some First Choice holiday villages over there.
If you was going another time of the year I would recommend the Caribbean as you would love the white sand. It often isn't more expensive than going closer to home and there are some amazing family friendly resorts.

I have a couple of reccommendations. The Riu Tequilla in playa del carmen in Mexico or the Iberostar hotels (there are a number to choose from) in the Dom Rep. great beaches, facilities, all inclusive (drinks are definitely better than HV egypt - I have been twice as well). We've been to the Iberostar COsta Dorada and twice to the Iberostar bavaro. Ticks all the boxes I would say. Weather about 31/32 degrees.

Thank you both for the recommendations, I will take a look.

Apologies for the silly question- why should we not try the caribbean in oct/nov?

I would say it's fine to go in Oct/ Nov. The hurricane season is over and the weather is great. I have been to the Dom Rep 3 times is December and although it is liabile to the odd tropical downpour, generally the wether is hot and sunny.

My mum and best friend have been in November and it rained for a lot of their holiday.

I would also suggest the Carribean. Mexico has a lot to do outside of the resorts compared to the rest of the Carribean IMO and some fantastic beaches. I'd probably choose it over other Carribean destinations to go with children. In fact, that's what we have done as we are returning with our children in December. It's also a lot safer to go out of the resorts on your own than most of the Carribean (not that any of it is especially dangerous) and it's a lot more developed, but the Riviera Maya still have a good 'tropical' feel, not too many buildings/hotels and no high rises.

I have been to Mexico early November and I think we only had one afternoon of rain. That said though, you do risk rain anywhere in the Carribean, but it's very unlikely to rain all the time, it's usually a very quick very heavy burst or an afternoon of rain and sunny again the second the rain stops. You can check the weather history on www.wunderground.com click on local weather, then on history data. You can look at the weather history for any destination on whatever day/week/month you want over quite a few years.

We are staying at the Sandos Playacar this time and they also have another property, Sandos Caracol, which looks amazing for kids. We previously stayed at the Grand Sirenis, which was great, but we chose Sandos for the great kids clubs.

I think your budget would need to be increased a bit for the Carribean though, but you'd get two weeks for a similar price to ten days.

I think the thing with October to November is to check if the pools are heated . I know a family that went to Turkey last October half term and the weather was about 25 which is very nice but the pools were like ice and she said pretty much unusable.
I would stick to more of a year round destination.

We are going to Antigua on 1st November, reason being it is the driest island in the carribean and outside of Europe it was the closest place we could go to - 8 hrs flying time, direct flight. There are some good hotels with kids activities etc. I have been before years ago and loved it, beautiful sandy beaches, nice temperature, chilled out but some excursions to do if you feel like it. I can also recommend Tereriffe, Costa Adege - it is a lovely part of the island and some lovely hotels, not the mad 20's party area you hear about!

Turtle Beach in Barbados is lovely - small-ish hotel and very family-friendly, with a good kids' club. Food is generally good, and they have good quality drinks as part of the AI plan too.

And because Barbados is further east than many of the other islands, they are less likely to get the hurricanes.

If you're feeling adventurous - Goa or Kerala in India.

goygoy · 21/07/2012 17:40

We've just booked for Tobago for Oct half term - our first time to the Caribbean. Going all inclusive - the price didn't work out that much more than a week in the Canaries as we got free flights/accom for the DCs (aged 4 and 8).

goygoy · 21/07/2012 17:44

PS.... Egypt was 2nd choice on our list wanttomakeadifference. Would be interested in any recommendations on where to stay for future reference!

MABS · 23/07/2012 21:14

Jebel Ali resort in Dubai :)

TheHouseofMirth · 07/08/2012 21:24

goygoy who did you book your Tobago trip with? We are looking at a Caribbean trip this half term and would love to not have to pay for the children!
