Orlando - Disney v Universal

We're off to Orlando in a couple of weeks. I've booked a 7 day Disney Ticket and was told it would be on our room key. Does it last for 7 days from the date you check in or does it work for 7 separate entries? We arrive late on Saturday and will probably just go to bed so don't want to waste a day's entry.
At Universal, I've booked a VIP tour for Islands of Adventure. It's really pricey but you don't wait in any queues. It's $1200 for the four of us so unless it's a fabulous experience, I'm tempted to cancel.
Any advice and tips would be great!

Are you staying in Disney? We normally go for the 14 day one as it's not usually much more. Gives us greater flexiblity. Not sure if it expires after 7 or 14 days. Last time we arrived and discovered epcot was open late. So we arrived, rode spaceship earth (as it closed on the Sunday) and then had a dinner and went back to hotel then slept until 7am the next morning instead of the 2-5am wakings we'd done before.

Never heard of the VIP Universal trip, will maybe look into that. But to be honest you head for Harry Potter first then get in line for everything else.

Yes, we're staying at The Beach Club Resort. I noticed that the 14 day ticket wasn't much more but we're only staying for 7 nights.
That's a good tip - I'll check which park is open late that night and maybe we can take the kids in the night we arrive.

We're staying off site next time, so plan to get to the villa, then supermarket and maybe crazy golf and the park on the complex.

We go on Friday, 6th visit, not heard of Universal VIP, queues not that bad and you can fast pass some rides.
Have to say because we been so many times and we know dgs is too young for Universal we only do a few theme parks - magic kingdom, epcot, hollywood studios and seaworld. I know that in a few years we will have to do them all as dgs gets older.
most parks stay open late but you need to check your tickets if they are hoppers you can visit more than one park a day.

The Disney room key ticket means you get extra magical hours and you can park hop.
