Dubai for a BIG birthday !

womblesmissus · 10/07/2012 20:20

My friend and I are planning a week long trip to Dubai in October/ November to celebrate our very big birthdays this year . Thought that lots of souks, sites and sand would send us gloriously into our 50th decade (God that sounds ancient) .

Wondered if anyone could offer advice on where to stay ? Whether we should go for half board and any special wee extras we could do that would make the trip special ?

Half board if you can do it as drinks and food make the extras bill add up. My favourite is here but to be honest most of the 5* hotels are good. I would book afternoon tea at the Burj as that is quite special. Swim with dolphins at the Atlantis. Really you can do anything - this is the place that built ski slopes in the desert. Smile

We are going in Oct and staying at Atlantis.. can't wait.
there are sooo many restaurants - half board would spoil the fun of going out and about for me but it depends how much you want to do in the evening.
Agree - afternoon tea or the sunday brunch at the Burj is a great idea for something extra - we are going to swim with the dolphins my DS can't wait.
I have been a few times before and stayed at Hyatt on Creek and Hyatt in city (no kids then). The beach hotels are great but not essential - Souk Madinat is a nice place to wander and have lunch. Dinner cruise down the creek is really nice there is a great mix of nationalities too. Hop on hop off bus I can never resist as the scenery is great and you can see the whole place in a day.
Ski slopes in the desert - how true - Mall of the Emirates of you fancy that - a desert trip is good with a meal round camp fires... oooh the fond memories!!

Get yourself an 'Entertainer' family book and maybe a fine dining too as soon as you land!! this is a huge book full of buy one get one frees. Your money is made back just from going to a waterpark as there are 3 buyone get one frees in the book.
Also has BOGOF for all Mall eaterys, the Aquarium at Dubai Mall etc and so much more.

Only use coloured roof taxis as they are metered, hotels will try and get you to use theirs and some are ok and fair but others will rip you off as tourists as they are not metered.

Some things to do are

Water parks, atlantis or wild wadi (i think wild wadi is far better)
Dinner watching the Dubai fountains is a must, better than vegas bellagio ones
If you go up Burj Khalifi, book beforehand as it is only 100dhs compared to 400dhs just turning up!
Creek trip
Captain Jacks little cruise from Dubai Marina
Dubai mall for fountains, Aquarium (use entertainer and its BOGOF to use the underwater zoo above aqauarium and a boat trip on top of the aquarium)
Ice skating at Dubai MAll
Ski dubai which now has real penguins at Mall of the Emirates
Ibn Battuta Mall is unique, all one level with different decorated 'country areas' India court, china court etc.
Gold class cinema experience
Karama for 'designer bags'
Gold souk, gold and diamon park, spice souk etc.. DO NOT buy from souk in madinat the prices are tourist prices as in the hotel and not a proper souk so you will pay 10 X's as much.
helicopter over dubai

I personally wouldnt bother with a High tea, especially at Burj Al Arab, its gaudy, overpriced and boring!!

I would go to a dubai institution known as Friday Brunch, every hotel offers this and is a 4 hour drinking and food extravaganza!
Obviously vary hugely in price, but i would go for the best which is the Al Qasr, you are given a map to go round as its that big, set over the 3 resturants of which you can use any, loads of outdoor cooking stations, waiter at your side filling you constabtly with non stop champagne, drink stations of every kind imnaginable and everyfood, thinks its 470-500dhs now, about £85 and worth every penny. Live band, your next to the burj al arab and waterways all around you.

Or the Mina a Salam which is hotel next door (part of same group as al qasr and madinat though) is exactly the same as above, tiny bit smaller but same amount as food i feel, and their is a BOGOF in the entertainer so u can save a fortune.

Alternatively the Fairmont is excellent, but more pricey or Yulamba and then every hotel varies from 100dhs up to 500-600dhs for champagne ones.

Some great resturants are

Frankies (in entertainer) marco pierre white and detorris resturant and its excellent we eat here all the time - well parents lived in dubai 8 years and i go allot.lol

The beach bar and grill - one and only also great hotel to stay in

Table 9 - used to be ramseys but taken over by the young chefs and is excellent

The Grand Grill - Habttoor grand

The Grill room - Sheraton

Panchanga - Hilton

West 14th - the palm

Pregos - Media Rotata

Left bank, |Rivington grill, noodle room, meat company all at madinat

Al Hambra, MJS steakhouse - at Al qasr (where the brunch is)

The Tepanyaki at the Rotana down JBR.

Will update with others as i think of them. hope this helps.

As its just you and friends and i assume no kids i would steer clear of staying at the atlantis or Jumeriah Beach Hotel, these are mainly for familys and very very touristy and prob at top end price wise but definately not best!

One and Only is amazing
The Madinat but again touristy
The Mena Seyahi/Westin
The Grovesnor
The Ritz
The Hilton
The Sheraton

All of these are going to be higher prices, there are great hotels which will be soo much cheaper but are just as nice in Media city, which is opposite the westin so still right in the mix or Al Barsha which again is behind Mall of the Emirates so right near everything just a short 5-15 min journey depending where u go (obviously going to old dubai- where the creek is etc will be longer)
But i know most hotels around here that we eat at alot that i can reccomend

Also use the Metro, so cheap and easy to use.

Get your full duty free allowance at dubai airport as being a visitor you can only purchase alcohol in hotels or licensed resturants (most of which are in hotels anyway) but you cant buy in dubai supermarkets.
(only secret places lol where as a resident you need a license)

Wow, some great tips, thank you all so much. Think we will have as much fun planning as we will when we get there . 50 is sounding better and better !
