The nicer side of Majorca?

Inspired (shall we say) by another wet weekend away camping, I want to book somewhere for late July / early August in the sun.

Majorca seems reasonable, but I don't want to end up in a fish-n-chips-pints-of-lager type resort. I know my ds (6) will appreciate being around other kids and a pool so don't want to go too remote, but also know that we need a bit of culture, walking, nice food, beaches that aren't too rammed, etc.

Any suggestions? (also suggestions of places other than Majorca appreciated). Thanks!

We have always likes Puerto Pollenca but have only been in April and October so no idea if it is too busy in peak season. Has a lovely sea front. TBH lots of that side of the island is.

Inland Pollenca itself is lovely. As is Soller and Port Soller.

I ditto Hulababy - we really like Puerto Pollenca. Beautiful beach - particuarly considering it's Europe, I'm never than impressed with European beaches.

Have a look at Menorca, it might suit you better

I second menorca, its lovely & very very family friendly. We went to cala n'forcat last Sept & went back in June as it was so nice

For young kids Menorca is super. Cala Galdana beach is hard to beat for little ones. As far as I know most places in Majorca are nice other than Palma Nova/Magaluf and some parts of Alcudia. There are loads of family friendly resorts. You could do worse than speak to a travel agent.

Soller and that side of the island is supposed to be lovely...

Another vote for puerto pollenca from me. It has a lovely sea front, lots of potential day trips along the coast, loads of eating options which are child friendly etc

There are lots of Brits there so potential friends for your ds, but it isn't 'British' iyswim.

We have also been to Menorca, but for us it was a bit too small & quiet, as we aren't the sort to be content on a beach all day. We prefer to get in a car and explore a bit, and in Menorca there's very little to be explored!

I really disagree with the idea of Puerto Pollenca not being British. The place is awash with British tourists. Whenever we sat down for lunch in a restaurant we had ketchup and HP sauce plonked down in front of us (except for an amazing little tapas restaurant near the port). I remember a Burger King and Trotters Bar (as in Del Boy & co) near the port and the large Spa supermarket opposite the beach has a large "English food" section. It isn't my idea of an "authentically Spanish" town.

Having said that, the beach is beautiful and perfect for little ones. The inland town of Pollenca is lovely - cobbled streets, great restaurants etc and every other MNer seems to adore the place :o We had a nice enough time there but I wouldn't go again.

We also spent a day in Soller as I had heard good things about it. The town was quite nice but the beach wasn't a patch on Puerto Pollenca.

There are burger kings in the most authentic Spanish places eg barcelona! I agree that the restaurants certainly catered for British tourists, but they certainly weren't 'full English/ Sunday roast just like blighty' type places.

Ujjayj - we went out of peak season and never had that bar one cafe place which was British, but we chose it as small and friendly. The other restaurants we ate in PP were lovely, ESP those on the pedestrianised but in the front. Had some great tapas, lots of fresh seafood, etc. also a nice but not cheap place at end of pier.
