Two weeks somewhere in August 2013

We had an early summer holiday this year, as it will be the last year for 17 years that we get to go away outside the school holidays, and now that we're back DH has tasked me with deciding what to do and where next summer.

We have two boys who will be five and two and we're thinking of the last two weeks in August. We don't want to go anywhere too hot as one 34-degree day this year made us realise how hard it is to keep our blonde DC safe and cool without just hiding indoors. Having said that, I love a bit of sun, or at least warmth, on holiday and the thought of two weeks of pouring rain makes me want to cry.

The best holidays we've had with the kids have been Dorset last Sept, when we were very lucky with the weather - but we loved the southwest of England, a catered chalet for skiing last winter, and this summer we self-catered in a gite next to several others all occupied by English families with other small kids and there was play equipment and a pool on site.

I'm open to the idea of the UK, the northern half of France, Belgium (although we went to the Bruges area two years ago and I wouldn't want to go back there again that soon), Holland, Denmark or Norway. If anyone has any good ideas I'd love to hear them. I've done some research myself and come up with a few places in the UK and northern France, but ideas of other places would be great.

Watching with interest as in the same position as DS starts school on September! Hop you don't mind me asking where was your ski holiday? Just planning our ski hold for Easter 2013 when DS can take to the slopes with us and looking for inspiration as all our ski holidays so far have been without childrenBlush thanks

We went to Les Gets with Ski Famille. They're not cheap, but for a first holiday with kids it was very easy and DH and I had a lovely time.

If you don't fancy a fully catered chalet the resort itself is great for families. Nice little town, self catering accommodation, creche at the base with about 1/3 English kids (apparently - I met a woman on the flight home who'd used it), two supermarkets, bars, restaurants, etc, and only about an hour or so from Geneva airport.

Pembrokshire is a lovely area.

Went to Les Gets 2 years ago and loved it. Am concerned it would be too low for an April trip though.

Really don't like having to be governed by school holidays but guess I'd better learn to live with it!

Yes, I'm starting to hate being governed by school holidays too and he doesn't even start until Sept!

I can't believe I'm researching a holiday we won't take for another 13 months. Our ski trip for next year has been booked since April.

With regard to high resorts - look at Les Menuires/Val Thorens, Tignes, Flaine, Saas Fee, etc. Anything over about 1800m and/or with a glacier will be fine.

P.S. Ski Famillle and Family Ski Company do Reberty, which is just above Les Menuires.

What about the Vendee? Of your list it will have the best weather. It only just clips into the northern half of France though. 3 hours drive from St Malo or 6 hours from Calais.

juneau · 11/07/2012 16:15

No interest in the Vendee really. We went to Charente Maritime this summer and it was nice, but I don't feel any urgency to go back to that area. Plus, it was a two-day drive from the UK. We could've done it in one if we'd got up really early and driven hard, but with two small children that's not a very pleasant way to travel. But thanks for the suggestion Smile

North Devon would get my vote. So much fun stuff for small kids but all the beautiful scenery and good food you need to feel you've had a gorgeous holiday too. Smile
