I just got a fine for driving on a bus lane.

The photo doesn't show enough detail for me to work out where exactly it happened. I went on Google maps to have a look at the road where it happened to try and see which bus lane it was. I only managed to see bus lanes with broken lines, but none of them had a sign stating the hours of operation on it.

My instructor said it's okay to drive on bus lanes with broken lines as long as it isn't during the hours of operation. But bus lanes that are made up only of unbroken lines, I am not allowed to drive in at all times.

I suppose I might have done something wrong by driving into a bus lane made up of broken lines without first looking for the sign which tells me when the bus lane's hours of operation are, and if I did not see any such sign, even if it's a broken line bus lane, I should just not drive in it at all??

I was driving on it at 6.20pm on a Monday evening.

Im pretty certain all bus lanes that have time restrictions are 7-7.

If you couldnt see any restriction times, you shouldnt have been in the lane.

Not over here though. Like the bus lane near my home has hours of operation on the sign saying 7.30 am to 9.30 am.

I'm confused tbh.

I will have to clarify with my instructor as well... Regarding broken bus lane lines and no signs saying what the times of operation are.

141 Bus lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs that indicate which (if any) other vehicles are permitted to use the bus lane. Unless otherwise indicated, you should not drive in a bus lane during its period of operation. You may enter a bus lane to stop, to load or unload where this is not prohibited.

From the highway code.

And I don't think this doesn't show any bus lane with broken lines, just "advisory" cycle lanes.

I guess that by Google maps you mean Streetview?

GobblersKnob · 06/07/2012 12:30

If you couldn't see the hours of operation then there was no way you could know that it was okay to drive in it.

We have some bus lanes that are only operational in the morning but some are used for the evening rush hours too.

tigercametotea · 06/07/2012 12:30

Yes I used Streetview. Couldn't see any signs with times of operations on them along the road's 3 bus lanes (it is quite a long stretch).

Yes I think I shall be avoiding all bus lanes where there are no times of operations on that I could see. I think my mistake was I got hung up on the "broken line" thing my instructor mentioned. I will have to ask him to drive down that road with me as well...Have a run through perhaps. He's never taken me on that road before.

Mystery solved... My DH Googled up this article which was recently published...
www.liverpoolconfidential.co.uk/News-and-Comment/Exclusive-Bus-lane-carves-up-rat-run-Mount-Pleasant

So it appears I am one of those caught in this recent development by the local council. No wonder the Streetview on Google Maps didn't show it!! Oh well... Just have to find alternate routes from now on.

Unfortunately I think I've been round that road a few times since then. I think I'm gonna be getting a few more fines in the post soon :(
