I'm now wibbling that this isn't doeable.

Going to my sisters apartment in spain. Washing machine. Towels etc provided.
Plan to buy toiletries at the airport, or if I'm brave in lidl when we arrive!

We have kindles, the kids have DS's (they are 19/16/13 or ill be so don't need games).

What do we actually need to take. I'm thinking he clothes we stand up in plus:
2 trousers/shorts
4 tops
5 pants
3 bras
(some socks- DH/DS will wear socks daily anyway)
1 jumper
swim cossie+ rashy vest for the kids (they burn like mad)
Hat
Brolly (for sun or rain)

Which already seems a lot in a little case.....

Plus kindles, my knitting (got to take that!), a hand bag to use. Money belts maybe, a few re useable shopping bags for shopping/beach

What else should I think about ?

thanks!

You havent mentioned shoes, I would wear your 'chunkiest' pair, ie trainers, and pack a pair of sandals or flipflops in your case.

shrimponastick · 28/06/2012 09:13

That sounds fine. Try packing it in the case and see if it will all fit nicely.

Remember that your handbag has to go inside the case when you are passing through the airport as you are only allowed one bag.

You do right to buy toiletries when you get there. They are the things which weigh the most/take up the most space!

Check the sizeof your carry on bag when it is full. If you stuff it too much it may expand past the permitted dimensions.

have a great holiday!!

Shoes - wear comfy ones and you need sandals/flip flops at the least.
Something to wear at night.
More swimwear - need more than one and they double as bras/evening wear. But you could get some out there.

Brolly can be binned. Buy one out there.

Will be fine. We often pack for 4-5 days in a rucksack. This is all you need also as you have the option to wash after a few days. Is a small suitcase a lot bigger or would it not be more practical for each child to carry a rucksack ( easier not to lose). They are also adults/ teens not really children so I would leave them to decide what goes in the space they have

Wear trousers, jumper/cardi, chunky shoes. Even if you're hot when you arrive it's very temporary.
Buy all toiletries when you arrive, unless you are fussy about certain brands for some things - and then throw away/leave the leftovers at the end of the holiday.

Then you just need to pack a few clothes.

Check the exact hand baggge size for your airline so that you can make the most of it - they vary a bit. I think you can also carry a handbag as well as your carry-on so a big handbag can add a fair bit to your allowance (and men can have a shoulder-bag....)

4lbsOfShiteInA2lbBag · 28/06/2012 09:24

Which airline are you flying with? Is there a weight limit on the hand luggage or just a size limit?

Wear your heaviest items (jumpers, trousers, shoes) for travelling.

Use the beachbag as one person's hand luggage.

Definitely buy your toiletries out there.

Can you check with your sister what is already in the apartment? When we stay at my Aunt's apartment in Spain, the arrangement is that guests can use anything that's there already just as long as they ensure that anything that is used up is replaced before they leave. Therefore we don't take much in the way of toiletries and suncreams and just take a note of what we've used and replace like for like before we go home.

girlywhirly · 28/06/2012 10:23

If you are talking about carry-on luggage, check that you are allowed knitting needles. They could be classed as sharp items (pointy) I can't see where they are specifically excluded, but they aren't on the list of OK items either. They would be OK in hold baggage.

The allowance is one item of hand luggage per person. Handbag needs to be inside it. You can however carry food and drink separately, that you have bought at the airport for consumption during the flight.

Theas18 · 05/07/2012 13:07

No knitting needles ..... sob sniffle!!!

After extensive research it seems that mostly they aren't expressly permitted or excluded. Advice seems to be wooden ones in a pencil case with pencils etc. and a crochet hook in case they get binned!

Make sure you buy toiletries in sizes you will use up (or leave them at your sister's place) as remember you won't be able to bring any half empty bottles back with you.

Agree with checking with sis what's out there already that you can use and replace.

this page govt advice says knitting needles are allowed. if you're going to risk it, might be worth printing and taking with you in case of clueless check in people.

Personally I think it's easier - and probably no more expensive - to book just one carry on bag and put all the family's toiletries in that, rather than buying in the airport and having to potentially chuck stuff away. If you do decide to do this, it's much much cheaper to do this in advance rather than at check in.

scrappydappydoo · 05/07/2012 15:55

Could you post your knitting needles to your sister.

Theas18 · 06/07/2012 15:39

Scrappydappy that is inspired!! She's there for 3 weeks soon .

Minipie. Sadly Different airlines have different rules and in the end the baggage inspector decides anyway. Even a printout iof the rules wont help- and they may get arsey at you for questioning.
