Checking car seat in at check-in

Going to Madeira in 5 1/2 weeks!!! (Yeah!)

Our LO will be 7 months old and stil in an infant car seat. We'll need it for transport purposes as without it, transport will be double what we normally pay!

Are we able to check the car seat in at check-in with our luggage? Also, can we check it in as part of our luggage?

The reason for asking the last question is because we're travelling with Jet2 from Leeds-Bradford and we're allowed 22kg EACH as well as 10kg hand luggage, LO too, and the buggy weighs 13kg so well over the 10kg limit for buggy and/or car seat. We understand we'll have to pay for being 3kg over but if we can check car seat in with luggage that would save us about £36!!!

I don't know about Jet2 rules, but have seen car seats checked in with other airlines, covered in layers of bubblewrap and parcel tape!

I'm not sure why you are taking such a heavy buggy for a 7mth old though.

I don't have any experience of Jet2 but we have never had any problems with other airlines checking in both a buggy and a car seat in addition to your normal luggage. It might be worth giving the airline a call to check though.

I would recommend getting a travel bag for the car seat or wrap it well as they do get bashed around and if it happens to be raining when you get to the other end (or back in the UK) you potentially end up putting LO in a soggy car seat.

I remember in airports, they have these places where they can glad-wrap your luggages for you. That will be enough to keep your car seat dry. Not if it gets bang about though. But I've seen those stroller bags (not seen the car seat ones). Don't think they give much padding either!

Have you checked Jet2 website? Many airlines allow one carseat and one stroller in addition to a piece of luggage for infants.

Also agree with girlywhirly that maybe your buggy is too heavy. If you get a umbrella fold, most airlines will let you push to gate.

We took our infant car seat (and all others) various times on the plane, never with Jet2 though.

We wrapped it in layers of bubblewrap and a huge strong bin bag, the one for garden waste. We never had any issues.

Pram: I had my DD in her normal pram, a Bugaboo for over 1 year. The Bugaboo also traveled with us, we took the base and the car seat up to the gate and the top part went into the hold. Maybe that's a possibility for the OP's pram. I personally don't like umbrella fold buggies for small babies and good ones cost a fortune.

The website says 10kg for car seat and/or pushchair. Over that amount i £12 per kilo over. Paying excess is not a problem but didn't think about wrapping the car seat. That will be a problem as will have to do it at the airport because he'll be travelling in it early hours of the morning!?!

As for the 'heavieness'. I don't see the point of buying another pushchair just for a holiday when I have a perfectly good one already and we are keen hikers and very familiar with Madeira as we have an apartment there, it is rough terrain in many places and need an 'off roader'.

We bought a big waterproof rucksack bag from a camping shop that the car seat fits into. At the airport we were able to put the car seat in the bag and add our coats as well (that we would not really need on holiday but wanted for journey back home). I have not flown with Jet2, but other airlines have not been bothered by this.
