DD needs not very expensive camera for rainforest trekking (camping, kayaking etc...)

Does anybody know of a decent camera for DD1, who is going to the Peruvian rainforest for 5 weeks this summer? They're paddling up various rivers so it would have to be water resistant but not too expensive in case anything happens to it!

We just stuck with a family camera in a waterproof rucksack when we stayed in a rain forest a couple of months ago and shared taking the photos.

No recommendations, sorry. But light levels in the rainforest are very, very low and the flash doesn't help at all. And a good zoom lens will be invaluable.

I hope she has a fabulous time in a wonderful part of the world! Am very jealous.

Thanks peri! That helps a lot. I have no experience of the rainforest although obviously the expedition organisers do.

Fluffy- did you get any problems with damp and such? She's thinking of putting her camera in a ziplock bag but it doesn't sound as though she'll be able to take especially good pictures with it if the light levels are poor.

I wonder why they insisted she took so much sun screen since she's hardly going to see the sky...

It is quite damp but we didn't get much rain so not too bad but we were in Argentina and Brazil. My mum went to Peru and said it was really damp but she didn't find it a problem as part of the experience. I hope your daughter has a great trip, she is very lucky.

No advice on the camera, but perhaps she would be better putting her camera into a Dry bag. You can buy them in varying sizes from little accessory ones for cameras and phones to ones to line your ruck sacks with, they are completely waterproof and kayakers/canoeists use them to keep their clothes/food/kit dry. She may well find them quite useful on her trek anyway.

Something like an Olympus tough? Should survive anything and available 2nd hand on eBay for around £60-£70?
