Fimbo · 27/02/2006 12:44

Has anyone ever managed to rent an apartment/flat near to central London for a holiday? Any recommendations?

Fimbo - what's your budget for the week?

Carmenere · 27/02/2006 12:53

I haven't done it but have looked into it for relatives, just done a couple of web searches - seemed very expensive iirc

Fimbo · 27/02/2006 12:53

£1000ish

House swap? Free!

elliott · 27/02/2006 12:57

try 'apartmentsapart.com' - or google ' apartment hotels' or 'serviced apartments'. not sure how many nights you'll get for £1000 but worth a try...

bubblerock · 27/02/2006 13:06

Fimbo · 27/02/2006 13:21

Bubblerock you are a star! The Bloomsbury one looks fantastic. I have just emailed Dh another one from that site at Camden Lock - so will add this to the list. Thank you and to everyone else too. Smile

Fimbo · 27/02/2006 13:22

I did try to reply earlier - but the site crashed, to many questions for DC I reckon!!

\link{http://www.vrbo.com\Vrbo} has some. How many bedrooms are you looking for? Any particular part of London?

I've had good experiences with this site, the properties tend to be pretty luxe. Alternatively, \link{http://www.homelidays.com\Homelidays} is probably a bit cheaper.

bubblerock · 27/02/2006 13:23

One of my favourite sites Grin

Fimbo · 27/02/2006 13:25

Thank you for the links NQC. We need at the very least 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Pil are travelling by train and will arrive at Kings Cross, we are coming from Norfolk but will have a car, so any area really.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 27/02/2006 13:36

Do you want to use the car in London (congestion charge and all?)?

You should be able to get something for £1000/week.

\link{http://www.homelidays.com/EN-Holidays-Rental/130_Ads/AdSheet.asp?PK=66721&FROMSEARCH=TRUE\Here} is one in Ealing that looks ok. 718 Euros/week. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms. One very nice thing about the homelidays site is, it now has testimonials! But none available for that flat. And all the other London flats either have only one bedroom, or one has six bedrooms and no specified price.

VRBO has a lot more places, but prices tend to be over £1. \link{http://www.vrbo.com/56027\This} one looks good, v. central. I think it's on the South Bank somewhere. \link{http://www.vrbo.com/69051\This} is similar. More Westminster, but prob still south of the river.

\link{http://www.vrbo.com/80711\This} one is near Portobello. Looks quite nice, up near the top of your budget though.

OMG \link{http://www.vrbo.com/76724\this} place looks great, and is a great deal, but a bit pricey for you maybe? Also only really available in holidays, I think it's someone's home, normally. Very beautiful, though! Oh, looks like one double bedroom and two singles, though?

3 beds, Camden Lock is nice, not expensive: \link{http://www.vrbo.com/77780\here}.

Ok, there are tons on VRBO and the front page makes clear how many bedrooms and bathrooms each has ... I'm stopping now as this is getting silly.

Fimbo · 27/02/2006 13:40

Wow thanks. The Camden Lock is the same one I am looking at on holidaylettings - I have emailed it to dh at work - he has just replied to say we will talk it over tonight - ooh I am all excited now as usually we just stay in Travelodges in London. This is going to be our treat as we have been married 10 years this year - and we will have baby sitters to boot. Yay!! Grin

OP posts:
bubblerock · 27/02/2006 13:43

ooh - that Camden Lock one is lovely!

bubblerock · 27/02/2006 13:44

x posts lol

NotQuiteCockney · 27/02/2006 13:47

The South Bank sorts of places look good if you want to be able to walk to places. I quite like Camden Lock, though, there are lots of pubs and clubs and so on up there. Also, people with interesting hair.

fimbo · 03/03/2006 13:02

Thanks to everyone - just thought I would update you all. We managed to book a week in Greenwich for >>>>> £550 in the summer holidays too! Going halves with the pil so 7 nights in London for £275 - what a bargain. I am very very Grin

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 13:07

Sounds good, fimbo. Flats do come out much cheaper than hotels, and that's before you even factor in the fact you can self-cater a bit.

How will you get into town from there? There are boats, but I don't think they're very economical ...

fimbo · 03/03/2006 13:26

It's a terraced house NQC with a free parking space! Greenwich is great for us because we come in off the M25. We will get the tube into places from North Greenwich (beside the Dome) or use the DLR. We do go to Greenwich quite a lot anyway but usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express. My dd loves the Maritime Museum and the market. This is the first time dh and I will actually have nights out in London - I am really looking forward to it Grin

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 13:28

That sounds good.

Oh, I don't know how easy City Airport is to get to, from there, but there's a lovely Dim Sum place up there, facing City Airport. (I think it's Prince Albert DLR station?) You can eat lovely dumplings while watching planes take off and land.

Where did you find the house through, finally?

fimbo · 03/03/2006 13:39

Ooh Dim Sum places sounds good and my ds would love watching the planes. We found the property through Holiday-Rentals.com. We normally eat \link{http://www.pieshop.co.uk/\here} its a traditional Pie & Mash shop. Really cheap and fantastic food - the kids love it.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 13:47

Oh, that's worth checking out in Greenwich. The dim sum place is \link{http://www.yi-ban.com/home.cfm\here}. Really good dim sum, quite child-friendly. We normally go on the weekend, but there are probably more planes during the week.

There's a good Thai place near there, too, a bit closer to town ... something like Nakhon Thai?

fimbo · 03/03/2006 13:55

That looks yummy! Do you know of any soft play centres in the area?

OP posts:
ChampagneandNappies · 03/03/2006 14:36

We've done this a lot - have a look at \link{http://chevalgroup.com\this} or \link{http://londonserviceapartments.co.uk\this}.
