Ds was born in the UK,dh is British I am not.We are in the process of applying to renew ds's passport and are stuck on the question about whether ds was registered at the Home Office.(I think it is question 1b)

I think that as dh is British, when ds was born and we were living in the UK, we didn't need to register him at the HO,I would have imagined that registering there was for children who were born to parents who were non-Uk nationals (if that even makes sense)

If the answer is yes,we have registered him, then we need his birth cert. If we tick no,then we don't need the cert.

Hubby thinks we should tick yes and find (here is my problem!!) ds's birth cert which is somewhere in storage/the attic after 3 moves since he was born. Or pay to get a new one,but that will prob take some time to receive.

I think we should tick no,as if we have to tick yes, then every single child born in the UK to one (or more) British parent would have to tick yes so why would they ask that question?? Just say, send your birth cert if you want a passport, the end, lol!

He has an old passport so I am going to include it in the application.

If you have got to the end of this, what do you think? Should we tick yes or no? We don't live in the UK any more, still in Europe, though, and ringing the helpline is exorbitantly expensive :(

This is the link with the notes for question 1b,not madly clear, imo.

Phone the Passport Office and ask.

It's like a million euro per minute to call the helpline :(

I prob will have to give them a ring but was wondering if anyone knew first Grin

Registering at the Home Office is not a minor admin exercise so if you'd done it, trust me you would remember!

It's more rigmarole than getting a passport. Chances are that you didn't.

Birth certificates come through incredibly quickly. Friend had to get a copy of his and he had it in days.

Are you sure you've got the right number for the passport service, not one of the online cheaty ones? The passport office is an 0300 number and is charged at your network's standard rate (cut and pasted this from their website:

For passport advice, call 0300 222 0000.
The line is open from 8am - 8pm Monday to Friday, and from 9am - 5.30pm weekends and public holidays.
Calls to 0300 numbers are charged at your network provider's standard national rate.

Thanks for the replies :) I bit the bullet and phoned them and I wasn't actually on there very long so not too stressed about the cost!

It is soo complicated, though, added to the fact that my kids have all been born in different countries and we have moved umpteen times and birth certs etc are never where they should be!

Now the worry begins that I get it back in time...
