Aboard is too expensive
Looked at Center Parcs - too expensive as schools have broken up

Want something to do, plus nice food and country pubs perhaps

have a 7 yr old DS to cater for as well

Not very country but we spent a night in Liverpool last summer and would like to go back for a bit longer. We stayed in the premier inn by the waterfront which was lovely and very reasonably priced. The area around it was great to walk round. We visited underwater street a kids hands on museum and there is also several other museums including a big new one.

I had never been before to liverpool but was very pleasantly surprised!

If its the end of July and school hols then self catering will be out of the picture as places only want full weeks in school summer hols. so i would look at what activities your 7 year old wants to do - outdoor, museums, theatre events etc, then search google looking for these and see where it takes you. if we have just a few days break i always go for the cheapest travelodge type accomodation and then spend the money i have "saved" on some fab activities. hope this helps.

What about the stay, play, explore deals in leics.

Stay at the Marriott and get free admission to local attractions inc,Twycross zoo,Conkers and the national space centre (plus a few others) only about £109 per family of four!

Legoland?

We went to York for a couple of days a few years ago and visited the National Rail Museum which is free. Last October we stayed in a Travelodge at Porthmadog. There are beaches and castles in the area, plus the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog railways.
