Travel Insurance advice - DD recently been in hospital overnight

Hi there, we are due to go on holiday on August 10th. Daughter had some sort of "collapse" last month and was kept in hospital overnight. ECG's were fine, we were told could just be one of those things ?!?! But we are waiting for referrals for cardiac and seizure investigations. I need to sort out travel insurance, and I am starting to worry about if we will get cover, anyone been in a similar situation and managed to get cover? Tia x

you should get cover, but what ever you do, make sure they know about the hospital stay or your cover will not pay out in the event of you needing it.

Often they ask if anyne is on a waiting list to see a specialist. If they are, you can't insure that person.

Try online quotes and then you'll have to actuall speak to someone, to ensure she is covered. If you find it's very dear or they wont cover her try a company called "Free Spirit" - if we can't offer insurance then we refer people to them. Get the rest of you covered cheap and try to find something specialised for her

you have loads of time, you can organise insurance even the day before. I would hold back and wait until you have some more answers and then start calling / emailing. If you are unsure if she has anything and what it is then they won't insure you or quote you a massive amount or , not insure for a 'possible' underlying problem connected with her heart ,just to cover their backs. Once you have a clearer picture you can give that to them and they can cover you.

Thanks very much for all your replies and advice . We have just had the appointment through for seizure specialist which is on 7th August, and we are still waiting for the appt from cardiac consultant. I think I will wait until I get that through before we do anything.

If your holiday is booked don't you already have insurance? What if you have to cancel?

QODSaveOurGraciousQueen · 10/06/2012 15:31

You don't have to buy it with a holiday secret squirrel, lots of people do it separately and do it right before they go.

But yeah, if it's not in place and you have to cancel, you lose your deposit.

LIZS · 10/06/2012 15:34

You just need to declare it when you take out the insurance - it might increase the premium and you may need to shop around but better that than end up paying 100% of the cost for cancellation

SecretSquirrels · 10/06/2012 15:46

No, I realise that you can book a holiday without insurance but I thought that unexpected cancellation was one of the things most people would want covered.

Thank all for messages. SS we booked budget flights and sorted accom out couple of months ago, insurance has been on my pending list since then Blush not a mistake I will make again!! I rang cardiac consultant's secretary today to chase up appointment she said it will be August/September before DD is seen as it is classed as a 'routine' appt. I explained my situation about insurance and she said she would ring me back. One of the standard questions insurance companies seem to ask is 'are you under investigation for any cardiac problems' and if you say yes it appears to be a deal breaker. I'll see what sec says when she rings me back and take it from there.
