Opening carton formula on planes with no sharp objects?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered before, but I'm wondering how to open ready-made formula cartons on the plane when you're not allowed to carry anything sharp...? I have seen one person mention rounded baby scissors. Or do most airlines help with this?

Will be flying from London to Oslo in July with our 7-mo DS. Hoping to rely on breastfeeding, but always prefer to have some formula as well. Plan to pre-order from Boots at Heathrow - does anyone know if they carry Hipp Organic?

Cheers!

Use your teeth. Always worked for me.

Open it before you get on the plane and put it straight in to the bottle! They might make you drink some while passing through customs etc just to prove it is drinkable.

I don't know the hipp organic ones, but ours you could tear a corner of the carton which was perforated.

We have taken formula cartons (100ml I think) in hand luggage, cartons in a see through plastic bag, just took it out at security as with toiletries.

Our problem was the budget airline (let's call them Brian Air) that wouldn't heat a bottle for us. I made a right fuss and they thankfully did in the end but grumbled about it being against the rules.

Thanks for your replies. If I use my teeth, it might take all day :) I'm trying to avoid bringing it in the bottle to the airport (plan to buy it airside after clearing security) but I'm concerned that I won't have a way to open it.

Hmmm, they don't make it easy, do they?!

I'm pretty sure the staff will have scissors or a knife and can open cartons for you.

Failing that you could always do what my DS did on a flight recently and put your scissors in a metal pencil tin. Didn't show up on the Gatwick security checks and i Shock when i discovered them halfway through our flight!

You'll be amazed at how you can summon your strenth to tear with your fingers if you really need to. I once had to feed DS in a train station - asked for a pair of scissors at a cafe and the only ones they had had been used to cut raw meat. I suddenly discovered my strength and opened it so fast they looked at me like Hmm why did she ask for scissors then...

Just be aware for the return journey - not all security checks are before shops. Schiphol in Amsterdam, for example - you go through the checks just before you get on the plane, after baggage drop off. No shops after that.

Teeth or buy nail scissors/ clippers airside...

tvfriend · 06/06/2012 14:08

By the way, you can order it in advance to collect airside in boots

brandarling · 06/06/2012 14:22

Good point about the return flight, Pftt. Didn't realise you can buy nail clippers/scissors airside - what's the point of all this security theatre, then? Oh, never mind!

Beanbagz, your story about hiding the nail scissors in a pencil tin reminds me of a knitting friend's favourite trick for getting needles onto a plane: she puts them in her umbrella.

I was mortified and a little proud that my 6yo had got past security. Of course i frisked him on the return journey!

A couple of years ago i was being frugal made us a packed lunch to take to the airport and walked through security at Manchester airport with TWO 200ml cartons of apple juice.

CMOTDibbler · 06/06/2012 18:00

You can take scissors on the plane as long as the blades are no more than 4cm long.

brandarling · 06/06/2012 18:23

Goes to measure scissors...
