Wondering if anyone could recommend a product for my ds on a flight? Then abroad without CBeebies?

I will be using traditional methods too!

A bag of small cars and some farm animals.

Really would not bother with a gadget.

Books, crayons and he will nap too.

Ladyopheliastar · 06/06/2012 22:22

He likes his technology and so do I!

I'm getting some apps on my phone for dd2 (18mo) to use while we are in a 4hour flight soon.

Luckily my fine has a large ish screen.

We also have a small mp3 player which she loves and a bag full of toys/aquatic draw travel mat things.

Tbh I'm still absolutely dreading the flight. Dd just does not sit still, ever

lambethlil · 06/06/2012 22:34

No no no!

2 is about 5 years too young. Install some games on your phone, but it's a really bad idea to introduce computer games let alone touch screen technology at such a young age.

Lol

Well I assume this is a joke post

Shock I hadn't thought of that merci!
My experience has been that once they start 'screening' it's one more thing to 'manage' and the younger they are, the harder that battle is.

ProcrastinateWildly · 06/06/2012 22:52

I got ds a Bob the Builder mag with some little toys with it when he was the same age, he played with them on the flight and the holiday too! Was worth every bit of the £2.99.

BertieBotts · 06/06/2012 22:55

Really, lambethlil? In what way? DS is 3.8 and has been playing games on mine & DP's phones from about 2.5. He's not hard to manage on it at all - he only sometimes asks to play on it and always gives it back when he's had enough or when we ask for it back.

Mum2Fergus · 06/06/2012 23:01

Agree with BertieBotts, our DS (3 in Sept) plays games and watches cartoons on iPad/Pod and Phone. Like all kids he has a short attention span so is not sat glued to it for hours-Id never let him regardless. ELC have apps for toddlers so no need to subject them to CoD just yet!!

iPad type thing would be better than a ds at that age, a ds is too fiddly

noramum · 07/06/2012 09:08

Books, magazine and crayons, the in-flight magazine and the emergency procedure card (both the best thing on every flight so far).

Walking up and down the aisle with Daddy. Eating snacks and having a drink.

We only recently bought an iPad and DD only used it at the airport as we had a long wait and she watched a movie. But she is nearly 5.

Whatever you do, don't put on any noise. I hate parents who allow their children noisy toys.

lambethlil · 07/06/2012 12:17

Bertie there's a world of difference between letting your child play on your phone and giving them their own screen. My dcs are teenagers, born before screens or even cbbc. Screentime is the only thing that's significantly changed in the last generation of parenting and the only thing that friends with younger children ask advice over. I say resist and restrict it for as long as possible.

Ladyopheliastar · 07/06/2012 22:06

Wow, hadn't realised it would be such a contentious issue! I think that technology has changed the way we lead our lives. I like to think of it as an enhancement rather than a replacement. I believe in balance in all things. My ds has been fascinated by my touch phone since he was able to see it. However, he only ever plays with it for a few minutes at a time. He loves Cbeebies but he rarely sits still to watch it, choosing to run around instead. He likes to play with new technology, but is just as likely to play with a cardboard box.

Magnetic jigsaw, a megasketcher and some new books. Mine used to love flicking through the Argos catalogue too!
