Has anyone taken a ferry from Split?

We have to get to Hvar, and will have a car.
Are the ferries OK? Clean, etc?
The internet isn't really being my friend here - I can't even work out if we need to get tickets in advance or can just show up - so any information at all would be great.

Did it a few years back now but the ferry was fine. Can't remember the tickets but don't recall any bad things about the trip so it couldn't have been bad. Enjoy!!

Thanks - and you're right; if you can't remember it it must have been painless!

Hopeful bump.

Yes, we just turned up with a giant camper van in the height of summer (no tickets in advance) and drove on to the ferry. Easy peasy lemon squeasy. It's not a long trip either. Perfectly normal modern ferries.

YES! That's the sort of positive it'll-all-come-good answer I needed. Thank you. I was getting a bit hysterical.

Now - I've worked out the Croatian for gin is djin, which I'm guessing sounds like gin - but tell me, does your average Croatian have any English?

Yes they do (it's really quite modern y'know...). I was there about five/six years ago at the height of Hvar hipness (without knowing) and it was still all maneageable and civilised. The food was shit and some of the attitudes still erred on the ex-commie-I-have-no-idea-of-customer-service-surly side, but a friedn went last year and apparently even all that has bucked up no end.

Make sure you have enough time in split to see Diocletian's palace - amazing if you can get through the crowds

Brilliant - thanks again. It does look beautiful - I need to be less doom and gloom about it.

You'll have a fab time.

Jadrolinija ferries are fine (they are the main operator). If you need help with the website let me know but I would imagine they are in english as well nowadays. I haven't used them for about 4 years but they were fine and modern then.

Croatia is a country with a very long tradition of tourism from the UK and elsewhere, and English is very widely spoken - more so, I would say, than in many parts of France. Lots of middle-aged and older people will also speak English.

Ferry is easy. We turned up at 8 with no ticket and got onto the 8.15 ferry a couple of years ago. There's a little booth at the port where you buy the tickets before you board, ice cream kiosk sized place! Hvar is gorgeous and you'll have a wonderful holiday. very few places took credit cards so you'll need cash - including for ferry.
