Urgent!! Sons passport has run out, flying next weekend!

Please help, I'm in a total panic. My son is meant to be going on holiday with grandparents on Friday, and I've just realised his passport has expired.

It's totally my fault, I must have misread the date when I checked it.

Passport site says Premium service is not available for a child. Does anyone know if there is any chance of a 7 day renewal coming in time? Can the passport office do anything if I phone and beg?

We can go to the office and wait for it, but is there any chance of this being agreed?

Please can someone give me some hope? I'm afraid to tell my son and my mother is obviously furious. I'm currently sitting here in tears and panicing.

Aug 2018 update - Just wanted to add an update to this thread for anyone in the same situation.
We checked all passports and found that our eldest's (age 15) was out of date (this was sunday and we travel on thursday) - DOH!

Phone call call to the passport office on Monday (0300 222 0000) told us there was no way a child's passport can be done any quicker that 7 days, but was advised to book an emergency appointment online here

www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently/online-premium-service

Luckily got one for Tuesday am (t minus 3 days) and then spent the entire of Monday reading this thread and getting pretty depressed.. it was really looking like we would have to leave and fly him down a couple of days later - he was cool about it, more so than i was tbh!

Any way i made multiple calls to the passport line to ask questions that had popped into my head and pretty much got a different answer from each person about renewing his passport. What no-one would do was to give an actual answer as to whether it was possible to get it earlier or not. They just kept saying "it's a 7 day service but you might be lucky"

advice gleamed from the multiple phone calls

  1. turn up early
  2. bring the child
  3. bring travel documents/entire itinerary for the holiday
  4. bring a letter from wife/husband saying that they give permission for the passport to be renewed
  5. bring birth certificate
  6. Countersign the form and photos even though it isnt required for a renewal

What swung it was the fact that even though we didn't need to countersign the photos and the renew document (according to their website) we had done it anyway on the advice of one of their call centre people. The supervisor said if we hadn't had it countersigned it would have gone to the 7 day system not the premium 4 hours. So there it is.. I really hope this helps someone else.
