Studland Bay is fantastic - can walk for miles (ignoring the nudist bit ), get to it via a pully type ferry from Sandbanks, Dorset. Corfe castle etc nearby, & Bournemouth etc.

Takes us 2 hours from Reading

Or the Witterings. West Wittering is just beach & fields, East Wittering is commercialised but a stony beach. That is somewhere else we go to for day trips.

N Norfolk? probably 2.5 hours from N London, could be 3.

Highcliffe, Dorset - massive beach.

Camber Sands, Sussex - sand dunes, lovely beach.

Winchelsea/Rye - nice area but stony beaches until tide is out.

The beach at Camber Sands is nice, although can get very crowded in the summer. Can't remember what the surrounding area is like though.

What about Brighton?

My personal choice would be a Norfolk beach as they are generally quieter (although the journey time could be more than 2 hours from London)

x posts with Blu and KBear - was going to suggest Rye too!

I'd go with norfolk. Depends what part of london you are in, but we did croydon - norfolk in 3 hours.

Camber Sands. Lovely. Sand dunes ahoy! And there is a Great British Holidays resort there.

don't know how long it would take to get there but south wales-round the gower peninsula is fantastic.beautiful, amazing beaches..just stunning.

You could get to the Isle of Wight in two hours-ish? We found numerous gorgeous, huge, sandy beaches during our summer hol last year and are going back! If you get there early in the day you can get acres of beach all to yourself, though they get packed later in the day obviously.

I'm a great advocate for the IOW for family holidays, because it's such a small place you can visit all the tourist places in a week, no long journeys to get anywhere!
