Insurance for a trip to Europe?

Do you? Would you? I know about getting EHIC, just wondered about value of any other formal insurance.

ps: should perhaps explain, DH+DS going on a week long cycling holiday. Getting any insurance package to cover bicycles probably a devil, anyway.

I do, and I would. EHIC only covers certain things.

Some bank accounts give you free travel insurance, have you looked into that? It usually works out cheaper.

Yes and Yes. Shouldn't be much even with specialist cover for the bikes etc.

Definitely get insurance. A family were bankrupted after an accident in France meant they had to be airlifted home and EHIC did not cover that. It only entitles you to what the locals get, and in France they pay to visit a GP etc so you get the same rate.

Definitely get insurance.

I get annual travel insurance with my bank and it only costs me £30 to add dh and 3dc to it.

Yes, get insurance. Endsleigh are usually pretty cheap - mostly because you choose what you pay for so it's the bare minimum, but that suits me fine. Had a very awkward conversation with the bank (when getting quotes) as they were expensive but included loads of stuff I didn't need and didn't understand why that was a problem for me Hmm

AdventuresWithVoles · 30/05/2012 18:50

hmm.. may end up with 3 forms of insurance: EHIC, house (we think this covers the bikes) and something else on the off chance someone needs to be airlifted. Rather seems like overkill, though!

TBH the bikes themselves would be the thing I'd be least likely to insure.

If somebody were to come off a bike though, or, god forbid was involved in a road accident, the medical bill could be extortionate. That is what you need the insurance for.

This table is helpful for anyone with same questions.
Some countries do offer free hospital treatment with EHIC.

They are flying with RyanAir. Believe me, we are very worried about the bikes!! Wink

Oh yes, we never go without.

Travel insurance covers so much more than a visit to the GP if you are ill. What if you can't go due to illness would you want to forfit what you had paid or rather claim it back through insurance?
What would you do if one of you had an accident and you had to stay away for longer? Could you afford the extra costs?
If someone died could you aford to repatriate the body, at a cost of thousands?

Travelling without full insurance is just not worth the risk for the sake of a few pounds.
