Chicken pox dilemma - should we cancel holiday?

Both my DDs, (aged 1 and 5), were playing closely with a friend last Friday, who the next day came out in chicken pox - neither of mine have had it. We are due to fly to Spain on Sunday for a week. If they come out with cp before Sunday, we will cancel and insurance should pay - but incubation period is 10-14 days so most likely they might come out with it while we are away (and could be infectious but not showing when we fly). Airline says we can't fly with spots for 7 days after - so we could be stranded in Spain, unable to fly back. My inclination is to cancel the holiday even if no cp by Sunday because the risk seems too great - but we'll all miss our holiday and lose around £1000 as holiday all paid for and insurance won't pay out unless they actually have cp. Am I panicking unnecessarily - views welcome.

If they get it whilst out there what will happen? Will insurance company pay extra hotels etc

Can you get a doctor's opinion?

nothingoldcanstay · 29/05/2012 22:11

Poor you. I would still go.

Would your insurance cover you if they won't fly you back (3 of you stay another week)?
There is no saying how badly they would get it and you might be lucky. Mine hardly had a sniffle and the spots were few. There is plenty of cream and stuff in Spain to treat it.

Insurance would probably pay extra cost if we had to stay out there (they won't commit themselves but I think they'd have to). But proably not the best place to be with 1 or 2 sick children - and if they get it in sequence we could be out there a while (with my work breathing down my neck about when coming back....)
Dr says safe to travel unless get cp before - but did recognise the risk that they might travel infectious and might if pushed agree to give us a medical letter to advise not to travel which insurance company might accept. Too many mights.
And indeed, they might not get it!

I would just go! Why lose a long awaited hol on a maybe? Just done chicken pox - it wasn't that bad. Take piriton though!

I'd be inclined to risk it and go - assuming they were still well with no hint of illness - but make sure you had the EU healthcare cards and good enough health insurance. At this stage you know they've been exposed but I don't think it's certain they will catch it this time IYSWIM.

GobblersKnob · 29/05/2012 22:37

My nephew has been in contact with so many kids with cp (through nursery and friends when they didn't know), and has never caught it.

I agree it is a tough choice but it will be awful if you don't go and they don't get it.

Go and enjoy yourself. If the spots came out the next day on the infected child then he may well have been past the most infectious period.

mumto2andnomore · 30/05/2012 11:16

I would go as they might not even get it !

hopingtoo · 31/05/2012 22:47

Thanks for all the advice. We're going to go and hope for best. Fingers crossed!

Did your children come down with chickenpox after? I am in the same situation now, due to fly out a week today :/
