what's the story in Balamory?

Going camping in Scotland, wondering about going to Tobermory. Children are 2.5, 5 + 7. What is the best way to go? Car on ferry or foot passenger to Craignure and bus. Our schedual is fairly flexible, Edinburgh at some point, Loch Lomond (just because I sing the song to girls) and Glasgow my Alma Mater. Should we try to stay on Mull or take our photos and go? We only have a week, and will spend at least 1 or 2 days travelling there and back. Any tips welcome!

took DS when he was 3 and a huge balamory fan so was quite a long time ago.. had been beautiful weather in few days before hand but the day we were there it poured... we were in glasgow with family but drove to Oban and stayed the night there in lovely hotel on the front and then caught ferry across in the morning,
We literally only went to Tobermory so cant tell you if its worth staying longer although my mum assures me it is!
have fun!

I LOVE Mull. We go every year - have done since dd2 was 1 and she's 11 now.

From Balamory point of view - Spencer's house is now cream, Miss Hoolie's house is now blue, the garage is now a chocolate shop and I can't remember what colour it is! So I'm not sure how gripped the kids would be. The island in general is fab. The ferry is good fun and there are some lovely beaches. Calgary beach is beautiful. You can camp there Langamull is also fab but a longish walk for your 5 and 7 yr old and you'd need to carry the wee one. Tobermory has an excellent chip van and book shop. It is a great village but you'd probably need to prepare the kids for it looking a bit different to Balamory. Last year we went on the short 30 minute boat trip from the harbour and all the girls (dd3 was 4 then) really enjoyed that.

Mull is wonderful.
If your budget can stretch to a boat trip, this organisation is simply fabulous!
Sea life Surveys

We've been to Mull 3 times and are going back again this summer. And we don't usually return on holiday anywhere!

You do need to book accommodation and ferry crossings in advance, as it soon gets full in summer.

Sea life surveys did the 30 minute trip we went on Smile

Timely thread as we are going on a day trip from Oban next week! DS (3.5) knows that "it's a little bit like Balamory, Mummy but doesn't have a special castle like Archie has". Grin

Looking forward to chips for lunch Blush

Thanks for all the tips. Hoping to stay for a few days at the end of next week, haven't told them it's Balamory yet, will see if they recognise it. Hoping it will be a bit quieter with Scottish children in school. Hoping the weather arrow won't be pointing to rain!

Day trip from Oban on Jubilee weekend was terrific - sunshine made the day. Grin

Fish n chips on the harbour side were the best ever tasted!
