CD-thanks, dont worry wasnt going to book on your recomendation only and then come back and beat you up
just gets so hard, review sites like trip advisor are great but such differing opinions on same places it can be really hard to see the wood for the trees. I also have about 3 guidebooks, 2 of which love F.W and one doesnt! Just nice to hear opinion of someone you sort of know iyswim.

Make sure the Nob hill hotel isn't really in the Tenderloin - this area (between Union Sq and the city hall) is not very nice and quite druggy.
North Beach is the nicest area I think - between Fishermans Wharf and Chinatown.
My husband lived 2 blocks back from Fishermans Wharf and it was great - one block back from the harbour front and the crowds disapear....

Don't know how old your children are but there is a fab place to play in Berkeley if they are over 7 here
Fishermans Wharf is tacky but the sealions are entertaining.

Should add that I haven't been to the playground but when we were looking at moving to Berkeley this was one of my 'pluses'!

Tenderloin was one of the scariest places I have ever been. We went to a fab vegan restaurant one night and decided to walk back to our hotel near Union Square around 11. We walked down a street when I realised everyone was looking at us and that most of the people (men) were huddled in groups in shop doorways and a woman was standing naked in the street sceaming. DH and I were with an American friend who was looking pretty scared and it was a case of not meeting anyone's eye and walking down the centre of the street very quickly.
