Have you driven between safari areas or have you gone in light aircraft?

During the long drives do you see wildlife or is it on more central roads?

Did you go in 4x4 or mini-bus ?

Were you alone as a family or were there others with you?

Did you feel safe?

Were there loads of flies?

Did you go in hot air balloon?

How many days SAFARI did you have and was it long enough or too long?

What essential stuff did you take?

Did you wish you had anything else you had forgotten?

Where did you stay?

Did you go to Mombassa or somewhere else?

Which company did you go with?

Would you recommend them or stay away from them?

PLEASE POST ANY OTHER TIPS OR ADVICE

TIA

.

The trip was a package safari+beach, flights included in the price. I then tweaked the hotels etc on friends advice. The structure of the holiday, eg 2 nights here, fly to masai mara, 4 nights, fly back, drive to X, etc was the format offered. I booked a year in advance so was able to "tinker" with the itinerary etc. Flights, plus private 4X4 were my main criteria. Didn't want to spend half my honeymoon in the back of a communal mini bus. Did enough of that in my yoof!

so the safari drives were part of package rather than organized by the concearige in hotel

Will go to travel agen later this week then and enquire more

We have loads of brochures but am being boggled by too much info in them

and so thought if I asked people who had been there it would be much better

Thank you

In Samburu we stayed at Larsens camp . Our safari was a prebooked itinerary but with comapnies like Abercrombie and Kent you can tailor make it. The game drives were with the same vehicle and driver as did the whole trip, not from the hotel, although think you can book things like the balloon ride direct (best in advance in case the places are limited).

I got married on safari in Kenya

That was in 1998. We were actually over there when the Nairobi bomb went off. We were on safari at the time and knew nothing about it until we got back to the beach hotel. Wthere was extra security at the airpirt but that was it. Didn't visit Nairobi at all.

We went with Somak. They were very good.

We didn't actually see any bugs or flies or mossies. much less than when in Europe in summer! We did have malari tablets and all the vaccs before hand though, and used a mossie net every night. I got one bite on my first day at the airport and that was it.

We did a short safari, as well as an overnight stay at Shimba Hills reserve for the wedding. on out short safari we went to Tsavo West and then onto Amboseli.

Tsavo West is very much trees and it is much harder to spot the animals, but when you do it is amazing. This is where we got out lion sighting. Our hotel here wasn't that fab though - very basic.

Amboseli is plains and has so many animals, especially elephants. Our hotel here was brilliant.

I have the names of the Lodges, etc upstairs which i can find later.

We were driven between the two sites and it is a very long way. At least 10 hours a day in the van. And very bumby, uneven and unfisnished roads, even the so called main roads. But you do see wildlife most of the time, esp when in the parks. And we stopped off at a couple of villages for a wander round and a drink.

We went in a mini bus. There were just 4 of us in the mini bus most of the time. On the game drives within the parks there were up to 6. Everyone had a guaranteed window seat and could see out the top too. We had no fighting over views. And at all the parks we got out on our game drives for short periods.

We went just me and DH.

I felt safe whilst there yes, even despite the terrorist bomb occuring. the game drives have excorts who all carry guns. But this is the norm for them, and it is to stop poachers. Don't wear excess jewellwry though. I wore none other than my wedding ring.

We didn't do a balloon flight but it would have been magical. At the itme we couldn't afford the £200 each. And I m very scared of heights!

Next time we go, when Dd is old enough, we will do a much longer safari of at least 7-10 days and forgo the beach holiday part of it.

Essential things - warmish clothes as it gets chilly at night on safari and TBh Kenya was not as hot as we had expected it to be We went in August. And the malari tablets are a must!

We had a half day trip to Mombassa, but I wouldn't particuarly recommend it. I wouldn't bother again. Saw enough of it when driving through TBH.

Dh and I went to Kenya 3 years running as we loved it so much (before kids and the last trip was our honeymoon) we cant wait till our two are old enough to appreciate it! We stayed in Mombasa each time and booked the safari's with our tour rep when we got there. Went to Shimba Hills, Tsavo East and West, and finally on our honeymoon to the Masai Mara where we stayed at little governors camp. Had brilliant times every time we went and would recommend it to anyone. People are so friendly and we always felt safe. Can relate to the comments about guides being armed with sticks as the first time we went I was absolutely terrified and we were in the furthest tent from the camp and were woken in the night by a hippo eating the vegetation around our tent - cant fully explain the noise and the terror I felt. Was convinced I was about to be trampled to death and in the morning when I was telling our guide he said ah yes were you in the tent on the end? Magical memories that will truly stay with me forever. Am really excited for you just thinking about it - have a fabulous time!
