Child passport question

gracehedley · 20/05/2012 22:31

I am taking my son to Spain for a week. His father (my husband) won't be travelling with us. I have a different surname to our child. Is this in any way a complicated situation - am I going to be asked for ID to prove I am his parent (surely not!) or will they ask for proof that his father allows him out of the country? Thanks all.

I would get a letter from your DH and take birth and marriage certs.
My brother has had trouble travelling with his DSS without his wife (DSS's mum). Even had trouble once he had a letter from her - they all have different surnames!

i also have my passport in maiden name (just never got round to changing it!) but dh come too so not an issue- i believe (may be wrong) but you may need letter from your husband to give permission to travel - recent changes brought in i think to combat child abduction? i'd ring passport office to check though

I also have my passport in my maiden name and travelled with my husbands and DD out on holiday but my DD and I came back on our own, I spoke to the airline before we travelled and they told me to travel with my marriage certificate. They said it shouldn't be a problem coming into the UK but going out it might be. Nobody asked me for it on our return, but take it just in case.

TBH I travel a lot with DS and they rarely check but if they do it's a PITA if you're not prepared. Birth certificate/ marriage certificate has always got me waved through no one has ever asked for a letter of permission from DH.

My dd flew to S Africa at Easter with her grandparents and they were asked if they had written permission to take her out the country despite having the same surname. Thankfully we had given them a signed letter & a copy of my passport to show it was my signature. So I would take something with just in case.

Sorry I am assuming you are married... Woops! Sorry feeding DD and reading at the same time.

We took a friend of dd's skiing with us in February. I got her parents to write a letter of permission, with photocopies of their passports etc.. and stating our travel itinerary. I also informed the airline in advance.

Didn't need any of it in the event - but might have done, so would recommend forward planning.

I am going to France (on the ferry) in June and my passport runs out in October.

I have tried to google how long you should have left on your passport in order to get into various countries.

The answer for European travel seems to be 3 months. In which case I am fine.

Does anyone else know or has anyone any experience of travelling to France with a limited time period left on their passport?

I did try the website for the passport office but couldn't find an answer to my question.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry Grace, I was reading your thread but didn't actually mean to post on it Blush

Maybe everyone will understand why I couldn't find the answer to my question on a previous website!!
