Ryannair flight - travel cot as hand luggage?

We're taking our 4mth old dd to France with Ryannair. I know we can take her buggy, but what do you do about taking a travel cot? It weighs about 8kg, so I don. Baggage allowance is 15kg and as it weighs about 8kg, I don't want to put it in a case. It is also too long for hand luggage! Do they turn a blind eye or charge you for extra weight?

Best thing is to phone them and ask.

bran · 17/02/2006 15:02

Phone them and ask, but my bet is that they will charge you. They are a nasty bunch.

BudaBabe · 17/02/2006 15:03

I would imagine they would charge. Also you may have to sign a disclaimer should it get damaged. I did when I flew with a buggy which they then damaged!

SenoraPostrophe · 17/02/2006 15:03

ryanair are gits about luggage. they will almsot definately make you take it in the hold and charge you

harpsichordcarrier · 17/02/2006 15:04

I expect they will charge you, I would be really surprised if the ydon't

Blu · 17/02/2006 15:05

But if you get 15kg each, you will still have 22 left between you for other luggage - that's quite a lot.

Fimbo · 17/02/2006 15:07

I haven't flown before with Ryanair, but with any other airline (i.e. Easyjet) they let you put a travel cot in the hold. You are given an i.d. label to put on it at check-in then are told where to take it to, they usually have a separate area where these kind of things are taken, as they have to be scanned etc. It does not count as part of your baggage. HTH

Fimbo · 17/02/2006 15:09

I fly frequently between Norwich & Edinburgh and have never been charged for taking my travel cot (using Flybe) and Stansted to Edinburgh (using Easyjet).

SenoraPostrophe · 17/02/2006 15:09

it does count as part of your baggage - pushchairs don't though.

Fimbo · 17/02/2006 15:11

Oh dear conflicting opinions here. I have never had it counted as baggage before!

Fimbo · 17/02/2006 15:12

I think you need to do as the others suggested to phone Ryanair for clarification.

Hulababy · 17/02/2006 15:12

Different airlines have different rules. Same as with car seats, etc.

Reminds me I ought to contact Virgin over DD's car seat!

Fimbo · 17/02/2006 15:20

Ryanair's Terms and Conditions . Skim down to infant equipment.

katyp · 17/02/2006 16:19

Don't forget also that Ryanair are starting to charge for checked-in luggage fron the middle of March

Blu · 17/02/2006 16:27

You can get inflatable travel cots, and also pop-up ones. Google? try e bay?
Do they not provide a cot where you are staying?

MeerkatsUnite · 17/02/2006 16:32

Re Blu's comments:-

But if you get 15kg each, you will still have 22 left between you for other luggage - that's quite a lot.

Unfortunately not. Ryanair do not let passengers pool their luggage.

MeerkatsUnite · 17/02/2006 16:37

Where are you staying?. Can they instead provide a travel cot?. If it gets damaged by them their opinion is, "tough cheese".

Ryanair's so called "customer services dept" can be an exercise in frustration.

Infants do not get their own baggage allowance on Ryanair.

MeerkatsUnite · 17/02/2006 16:40

Infant equipment, including but not limited to prams, buggies, cots and car seats are considered to be inherently unsuitable for carriage by air.

Ryanair is prepared to attempt to carry such items as carefully as it can but only on a 'limited release' basis (i.e. entirely 'at your own risk' for damage or delay). You may therefore wish to ensure, should you wish to ask Ryanair to carry infant equipment on this basis, that you have suitable private insurance cover in force. Ryanair will permit passengers travelling with infants to carry a baby bag onboard along with their one piece of hand baggage allowance and also one piece of baby equipment free of charge e.g. buggy, carry cot or car seat to be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

bridgee · 17/02/2006 17:22

Have been trying Ryannair, but had enough of listening to engaged tone.

Read about Ryannair charging for checked in luggage, but kind of assumed (stupidly by the sound of it) that this would only apply for flights booked after March?

No cot at the gite - I would borrow one, but need one for a uk hotel stay in July (and they charge £15 for providing a cot!)

I don't know if I'm just naive, but what stupid rules for flying with babies. How do airlines get away with it? Or are others better? I guess the money we saved on our tickets with Ryannair, we'll have to spend on excess baggage charges!

The last comment I posted came from Ryanair's website regarding such matters.

Re your second paragraph Ryanair have been charging for excess baggage for quite some time now. They have caught a lot of people out and have upset them in the process. I have heard of passengers' passports being withheld until moneies have been paid.

Ryanair's attitude seems to be, "well you pay nothing so you get nothing". I sincerely hope they do not muck you around. They as an airline are a false economy, generally speaking others low cost European based carriers do not act as poorly as they do.

MaryP0p1 · 17/02/2006 17:38

Ryanair are really really hot on this subject at the moment. Hand luggage has to be certain size and if over will make you put in hold. Any weight excess you will be charged for. This is their new hot potato.

lexiemum · 17/02/2006 19:54

baby dux do a one for up to nine mths that fits in a hand luggage bag and weighs 4 kgs. I'd let you borrow mine but I need it for another couple of months - have seen them on ebay though, go for about £20.

vickyjbaby · 18/02/2006 16:32

Hi, we have flown ryan air 4x last year and we took pram and the cot, pram was wheeled up to the gate and the cot was placed in the area for special size / frigile baggage (same place as ski's). We did not incur and extra fees for the baby equipment. In fact BIG TIP: we stored some baby stuff in the travel cot, eg sheets, nappies round the matress bit and vests in the top (you do need to be skilled but on 1 trip I managedd to stash 3kg into the travel cot!!!)
