What if pram doesn't fit through X-ray machine?

We are taking our oyster carrycot and wheels to nice on a plane. No choice as its her bed there.

I am not totally sure that the wheels part will fit through the X-ray machine - what will happen if it doesn't?

Won't you just be able to fold it down to take through?? Confused

poocatcherchampion · 13/05/2012 17:45

I mean folded? On the conveyor belt..

Maybe you are suggesting we can carry it through the person bit, that's fine!

They don't put it through the x-ray bit. You push it through the person bit (emptied) and they might swab it once you're through.

MousyMouse · 13/05/2012 17:52

usually they ask you to fold and to put it through the handluggage x-ray. they are quite big, so if you fold it and remove the wheels it shoukd go through. you can check it in, then it would probably go through the luggage mashines.

I've never been asked to put a buggy/pram through the hand luggage xray - guess it depends on the airline

we have on the eurostar, and i think at birmingham airport too, but can't quite remember. but if it won't fit they'll just have to check it manually i would have thought. or at a push send one of you down with it to oversize baggage and you'll have to manage without it in the departure lounge. perhaps take a sling in case of this eventuality.

poocatcherchampion · 14/05/2012 09:22

Ok thanks for this! We are Birmingham - typical! HD thought of sling just in case. Lots of things to think about with this small person coming!!

sling is always a good idea for travelling.
a) airline/airport staff are not softhanded and the pushchair might break in transit
b) you only might get the pushchair back with the luggage after queueing at immigration for an hour
c) dc is unsettled by all the travelling and wants to be held all the time.
d) boarding the plane with baby in arms + handluggage is a challenge without sling

Have you spoken to the airline about being able to take the pram to the aircraft, some are quite strict on what they will allow and only permit one piece fold flat prams.

You could get to check in desk at the airport to find that it has to go in the hold as checked baggage.

I too would be very warry of putting it unwrapped in the hold - I used to have a second pushchair to use for travelling!

MOSagain · 14/05/2012 10:47

We are always ask to fold and put our prams/strollers through xray machine.
If it really won't fit then I suppose they could 'wand it' when you go through the walk through bit.

Be careful with an expensive pram though. Our Phil & Teds was damaged despite being in its travel case and if you read the small print they put on the labels on prams you will normally find that they exclude liability for any damage to it.

MousyMouse · 14/05/2012 11:03

yes, def check your travel insurance that luggage/pushchairs are included.

we have a cheapo buggy for travelling, so it does not hurt too much if it gets damaged. I have seen airline/airport staff dropping pushchairs from the door of the plane down onto the tarmac (a good 4 meters). they really don't care als long as everything fits into the plane...

MustControlFistOfDeath · 14/05/2012 11:20

I have alwayshad to put the buggy through the machine (Birmingham and Bristol airports), and have seen someone redirected back to check in as their buggy wouldn't fit through. Don't assume they will let you take it through the walkthrough bit and wand it - if you are going to risk it make sure you allow plenty of extra time in case it doesn't fit through and they make you check it.

I also wouldn't risk taking an expensive buggy/car seat whatever, they do get thrown around a lot.
