youth hostelling abroad - ever done it, with or without a family?

Now my sons are older, I might brave taking them abroad for a short break to a European youth hostel. We have already stayed at 6 or 7 hostels in England.

According to the hostelling websites, it looks like rooms cost the same in high or low season, making this a bargain option for the summer holidays (when my sons will be 7 and 12 years old).

More and more hostels are offering small rooms or family rooms. But, I don't fancy being stranded somewhere miles away from home that's totally unsuitable for us.

It's a long shot, but has anyone done any youth hostelling abroad with children on tow? Has anyone in their past lives stayed in a nice hostel that would be good for kids?

Bad hotel would be worse (given these things are often chosen on spec) and the option to bail out in the worst case scenario means you're losing less money. I'm sure it will be fine (this is the one taking her two children aged 5 and 3 for the first youth hostelling experience this summer in the US!). It WILL be good

Hope you enjoy your holiday. I've never had a bad time at any of the UK youth hostels we have gone to. Agree that choosing a hotel on spec could be more risky.

Bumping this on the offchance someone else can help.

I,m sure if they are part of youth hostling international and not just backpackers they will be fine. I have only stayed in UK youth hostels.
